    Exclamation George Alfred Holding.

    Good Morning Everyone

My brickwall is that of my great grandfather George Alfred Holding.

The facts I know are as follows -

    1) George married Grace Ethel Jones on the 17th of June 1906 at the Parish Church in Camden Town. According to the marriage certificate, George's father was a William Holding, whose occupation on the certificate was that of a sailor and was deceased by the time of the marriage. The witnesses to the marriage were William Richard Jones (Grace's father) and a Susan Lenny (no idea as to who she is). I have no idea as to the name of George's mother. The marriage certificate states that George was born in 1877.

    2) Now, as William is a sailor I have researched William and have found a William Henry Holding who was born on the 6th of April 1859 in Southwark (according to his naval record). I have not been able to track down his birth certificate as yet (I have applied for so many!). According to his naval record he was born on the 6th April 1859 in Southwark and joined up in 1874 and served mostly in the East Indies. I have a list of ships and am slowly trying to track down their movements. He was on board the HMS Flying Fish when George was born in 1877. I have been unable as yet to track down as to where the ship was just before George's birth (to narrow down where George might have been born). I can find no trace of a marriage for William so far. I have checked the 1881 census and William does appear on board HMS Eclipse (which ties up with the naval record) and is stated as being married but born in West Lynn Norfolk. I do not know where HMS Eclipse was at the time of the census. According to his naval record he went AWOL in Mauritus in 1881 and was never seen again.

    3) George I believe may have served in the 1st World War as I have found a record in the archives but this record shows that this George served with the Yorks & Lancs Regiment, not a southern regiment which I would have thought he would have served in as he was living in London. He survived the war and if this record is my George then he also was awarded a Silver War Badge. He went on to work on the Railways and was a Municiple Bath attendent. I have not been able to find Georges birth certificate, so cannot confirm a date of birth. I do not know if he had any brothers or sisters either.

Please can you help me get past my brickwall! There are a lot of George Holdings and there may be a tie up to one I am already aware of, I just have not found any evidence to prove any of them as yet.

    Thanks

    Alexis

According to the marriage, parish records, George was living at 74 Westminster Bridge Road and Ethel was living in 88 College Place. Have you tried searching these addresses in the 1901 census. What is the ref for William in the 1881 census ?
'' No one knows who we are or where we are going until we have been and gone ''.

    Researching the following families;
Kitchin & Sharpe, Cumberland, Canada, USA : Dixon, Lancashire, Westmorland, USA
Fell & Hanslow, Warwickshire, Staffordshire, USA Australia.
    Guess, Buckinghamshire : Meakins, Northamptonshire

Good Afternoon everyone and thank you for your help so far.

Elaine - Thank you for your information re the census, I will follow that up

The Lady Marion - Thanks for the information concerning Susan Lenny I will look at a local map and see where she lived in relation to George & Ethel and try and find out some more information about her.

Noggin28 - Thank you for your information as well, I will investigate the addresses from in the subsequent census and see what I turn up. As for the 1881 information I have about William, I believe the reference is RG11/5633. Looking at the page on A......y it goes: Royal Navy - Vessels -District Eclipse - 7. If this does not work if you search the 1881 census for a William Holding born in West Lynn, he will appear.

Once again thank you all for your help.

    Regards

    Alex

Elsabels - Thank you for your information as well, I found the 1901 census information a few days ago, am a little unsure about this information as I have Georges Marriage certificate from 1906 in which he states he is a labourer, could he still be a labourer and work on the railway?

    Hello Harlequin,

I consider this to be the correct information for your ancestor for 1901, it is likely that he was an employee of the local Railway company as a labourer....you mention in your post that He went on to work on the Railways. It is likely that he spent some years working for them

If WH HOLDING was born circa 1860 he would have only been 17 when GA HOLDING was born! and a minor when married, so any marriage would probably be conducted under a marriage licence!

Hi - you asked who Susan Lenny was - as a witness on your relations wedding certificate -

    Bermondsey, London

    Susan C32

    Wife
    Walworth, London

    Elsie M 3

    Daughter
    Westminster, London

    Horance A L 2

    Son
    Westminster, London

    Herbert V 6 M

I am assuming it is the right one as she is already married and has children and surname is unusual - therfore was there another susan who married into the Lenny family within five years
