Thread: BUCHANAN John Robert

Hi Katydid!

If you check out Google Maps you can see that Dumbarton and Loch Lomand are within close enough proximity for your John to say he was born in one or the other. The 2 years difference stated in his age is insignificant. On both his Marriage and Death Cert his parents are named as George and Elizabeth.

I have checked out the free initial searches on Scotland's People (assume you have been on here?).

John Buchanan with Father George and Mother Elizabeth (1)
John Buchanan with Father George and no mother (1)
John Buchanan with Father George and Mother Stewart (0)
John Buchanan with no parents stated (108)

For instance, the 1851 Cencus shows a family living in Coldrach Parish, Buchanan which is very close to Loch Lomand.

This has John (Farmer of 260 Acres so a wealthy man) born Drymen and Elizabeth born Dumbarton.

Buchanan is in Stirlingshire.

The kids are shown as being born variously, Dumbarton and Buchanan. Kids include:
Robert 18 born Dumbarton
John Kissland, 15, born Buchanan

In the 1861census, John is still with the family but Robert isn't.

Remember the possibility of him changing his name - not useful to track him of course!
