Thread: MARK MARKS

Hello, thank you for this, its a great idea and i do hope you will be able to help me.

I am trying to find the birth, parents and siblings of my ggg grandfather MARK MARKS - so far i have found the following:-

Married 25th December 1813 St Martin in the Fields, Westminster to Elizabeth Waltham

1841 Census has him living at 93 Blackman St, Borough, Southwark / Carver and Gilder with his wife Elizabeth and children Henry b.1820, Ann b.1826 and frederick b.1827 (they also had another child Charles Marks, my gg grandfather, born c.1818 Newington).

I found Henry and Mary Ann (i'm not sure if this is the Ann on the 1841 census) were christened on 8th Sept 1822 and they were living at New Dover Road and Frederick was christened on 10th Oct 1827 they were living at William St, Lambeth.

From the The london Gazette i found that MARK MARKS was Bankrupt in 1840 and on 10th April 1849 he died ; Cause of death:Hanging himself at home, 93 Blackman St, Southwark by a woollen cord to a rafter - Temporary Insanity.

For a long time, there was a rumour within the family that there was jewish blood, but i have yet to find that connection and i am hoping that by finding Mark Marks birth, parents etc i will be able to prove or dispel this rumour.

the marriage is 1813 so pre marriage cert. parish register is on line but fathers name not given in them so no help there. witnesses mark bailey and maria davey

i saw that one too - wasnt sure if it was the same couple or not. mark was a labourer i think and being in the poorhouse didnt seem to fit with their position as carver/gilder etc later. that was a more skilled craft and would have taken training .
