Exclamation Patrick O’Donnell and Margaret O’Neil

I can’t find any information about my 2nd Great Grandparents, Patrick O’Donnell and Margaret O’Neil.
They had a son, Thomas O’Donnell, born around 1853 in Tipperary, Ireland, who migrated to Australia and married Ellen Danahie (Donohoe/Donahir).

Thomas’s birth certificate indicates that his father was a farmer (I suppose they all were back then) and that there is an older male son.

Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

    Hello

When did Thomas O'DONNELL emigrate to Australia,

Presumable the Australian marriage certificate indicates that his parents were PAtrick O'DONNELL and MArgaret O'NEIL?

I can't remember exactly, someone here will I am sure but either the death cert or burial entry gives info regarding siblings, with dates, on Australian documentation. Not sure how much info you have.

Statutory records of births, deaths & marriages only started in Ireland in 1864 (1845 for Protestant and Non-Conformist marriages). So you won't find a birth certificate for Thomas or his brother. Prior to that you are heavily dependant on church records, where they exist. In general, there are few records prior to 1800.

To use church records effectively, because there’s no centralised index, ideally you need to know the ancestor’s exact religion, townland and parish in Ireland. (Otherwise it’s a needle in a haystack). The family were presumably RC but that still leaves a lot of O’Donnells in Tipperary to search through. I take it you have exhausted the usual sources eg gravestones, family bibles, wills and obituaries?
