    Exclamation My Brickwall

My Brickwall Is My 3rd x Great grandfather. He was bnoworn in 1831 in Stirlingshire Scotland. In the 1841 census it shows him living with his mother Catherine Mitchel and his grandfather. I know his father name was also thomas carrick born 1801. I don't know if his parents were married. I can't find anything for the Thomas born 1801 or what happen to Catherine. Thomas is in all the other census. He married a Elizabeth Campbell in 1853 and my thomas was a cooper. Thank you

    Hi Lynn!

I assume you have Thomas Carrick's (1831)Birth or Marriage Certificate, as you know his Mother's name. Do you have his Father's occupation?

I looked at the 1841 cencus where he is living with Walter Mitchel (50), Catherine Mitchel (25) and four children. Interestingly, all the children (aged 2 - 9 years old) have different surnames! I wonder if they were baby minders? A bit like foster parents today these got paid to take children in. They could, of course,be Walter's grandchildren.

Have you checked out Scotlands People for Catherine Mitchel marriages?

    Hi again!

I have done a few searches on Scotland's People. This is a pay per view site so I have only done initial searches.

I can't find a birth for a Thomas Carrick 1829-1832 with Mother Catherine. Nor did I find a Thomas Mitchel for the same dates but did find that there are two listed (surname only) Mitchel children born to a Catherine Mitchel for the same dates. You would need to join the site and pay to view records. If you haven't used it before you will find it really useful for tracking your Scottish ancestors because you can pay to look at the original documents (including church records).

I din't find a marriage/banns between any Carrick/Mitchel 1825 - 1854 but did find there were three for Thomas Carrick (no spouse name given) for the same dates.
