    Default Census Problem

I have a problem concerning my 3rd Great Grandfather's census documents. In the 1841 census he is recorded as 40yrs of age, this would make his date of birth as 1801. But, in the 1851 census he is recorded as 53yrs of age which would make his date of birth as 1798. This is the case with the 1861 census. I know I have the right person in all census as he has 3 children & their dates of birth all match. Also, the adress on each document is the same. It could be that I'm missing something simple as I have only been researching my family history for a few months. If this is the case then please forgive my ignorance, but I would really be thankfull for any help anyone has to offer.

    Hi Mike!

You will often find the dates of birth given in the census aren't accurate. As you know you have to give your age on the night the census is taken so even if your birthday falls the day after you would appear to be a year younger. Likewise if your birthday was the day after the census you would apear to be a year older! Besides that, people do give the wrong age either in error or on purpose or it may just have been down incorrectly!

As you are sure you have the correct family, the difference of 2-3 years is nothing at all. You may even find wider age gaps on family you are certain of! Have you managed to get your ancestors birth/marriage cert? This will given you more correct dates.

In the 1841 census ages over 14 were rounded down to the nearest 5 years, so someone aged 43 would be recorded as aged 40.

    Hi Mike!

It has, quite rightly (!) been pointed out to me that my suggestion you may have marriage/birth certificates pre 1837 is incorrect! My apologies for mis-leading you! Official birth/marriage registration was not required before September 1837!

Happy hunting and please do ask if you have any further questions or need help in searching! The members here thrive on a good search!

You will not have certificates pre 1837 but entries can be found in Parish Registers.
