    Exclamation John Tibble

    Hi

I am looking for the parents of John Tibble, b 1781/2 in Hampshire (possibly Witchurch). He would be my5th great grandfather.
I have him on the 1841 / 51 / 61 census, dying in 1867. (He died in Crayford in Kent).
From the census' I have this date of birth for him - but this is my brick-wall I cannot seem to break. I cannot seem to locate either a birth for him - or any documents which could show his parents.
John married Ann Harden in 1806 in Plumpstead Kent. On occasions, I have found his name listed as 'Tibel'. This carries on as some of his childrens births are also written in this way.
John and Ann had 6 children born 1808 - 1824 (Henry, Elizabeth Ann, James, Mary, Jane & William). Their daughter Elizabeth had an illegitimate child born 1831 called Eliza Ann ~ who was raised by john and Ann as their own child.
John worked as an Agricultrual labourer - only on his last census return being listed as an Alms man.

I would be so great full if this could be researched as I have been stuck on him for a number of years.

    Thanks in advance
    Clare

    Hello Clare,

Interesting that your TIBELS in the 1861 census are described as Almsman / almswoman, most areas had almshouses for the elderley, usually a bequest form a local partron, under the terms of the gift, an application for supported would be needesd, there fore you should probably be looking for documentation form when the couple applied for this...it could even be administerd by the Church!

The local record of will advise you of the whereabouts of any papers.....genuki.co.uk

The other alternative, was he in the army and acquired the alms via this route!

Have you looked at familysearch.org.uk ( IGI)

I'm not doing the research for you as I know you like to do it yourself!

Then get the Parish Register entry, it may show where they lived

Thanks for the links, Have hada look - bu as of yet no breakthroughs.
The info for the 1861 census is that both John & his wife were living with their son - in -law Daniel Bull, in Bexley Lane, Crayford, Kent, not sure why they would have been listed as alms men. I wasnt aware of the records for this existing.
I have checked for an army carerr or service for him & cannot find one. He was listed on every census before this as an ag lab, with no gaps or missing years. I have cecked military papers but have not come across any.
So any further help on this would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    Clare

    Hi Clare

    Is this any use?

Joseph Tibble married Mary Huse, 1st November 1767 at Kingsclere, Hampshire.

    Batch No M135674 refers (IGI).

Kingsclere is 8 or 10 miles from Whitchurch.

not sure why they would have been listed as alms men
Alms; Money or goods given as charity to the poor

You probably need to have a look at the Church 'other' records for thsi information, ot find out whether there was a Benefactor who at some point left money, the interest of which was to be paid to the poor of the say village! An Application would need to have been made to the relevant 'Trustees' interesting that there is also another almsman on the same page!

Thanks for your help - will try and look into it further, typical though, this week this thread is being looked at and my eldest is poorly with a stinler ofa bug & littlest is teething - so not toomuch time to me for looking at my fh research.

Where would I find the church 'other' records? Are they avaliable on line? I haven't come across them before.

I do mean to look into the Joseph you were able to locate - to see if we can find more of his family, and possibly workout for sure if the marriage is for the right parents as the marriage is 15yrs before his birth - hoping my boys stay asleep..... fingers crossed

    Thanks again
