    Exclamation Albert THOMPSON

My grandfather, Albert THOMPSON, has disappeared !

He was the son of Thomas THOMPSON (1843-bef 1911) and Hannah PLATT (1843- ), was born on 10 August 1880 in
Pendleton, Salford, Manchester. He became a Marine Engineer.

He married Ellinore Aloysius FITZPATRICK on 14 January 1911 in St. Paul’s Church, C.of E, Tranmere, Birkenhead.
They were divorced on 10 February 1936.

Ellinore Aloysius FITZPATRICK, daughter of Thomas William FITZPATRICK (1852- ) and Anastasia CONNOLLY (1856- ),
was born in 1885 in Cork, Ireland. She died on 13 March 1960 in St. Vincent’s Hospice, Old Swan, Liverpool,
Sub-district of West Derby, Liverpool. She was buried on 17 March 1960 in Bebington Cemetery. She and Albert
    THOMPSON had the following children:
Thomas Francis Xavier Patrick THOMPSON (1912-1986), born on 27 March 1912 in Cork, Irish Republic.(*7) He was
baptised on 8 April 1912 in St. Patrick, Cork.(*8) He was in Design Engineer (retired).

I have various exam and crew list records relating to his career as a Marine Engineer, plus records of where he
lived over the years. The last record I have is from Kelly’s Directory for Birkenhead, which lists "Thompson,
Albt. 26 Easton Road, New Ferry". Then he disappears.

I have checked local electoral lists and cemetery records, and all the BMD's available on the internet, up to
1960, at which time his ex-wife is declared a widow. There are many 'Albert Thompson' listed in the death
indexes, but none are the obvious one.

Where did he go? How can I find him?

Hope this helps

PS: Having previewed this Post, it still isnt quite right, but the addresses given are where he was living at the time.

    Hi elsabels,

I also have copies of his CR2 and CR10 Central Index Register Of Merchant Seamen Record Cards, obtained from Southampton Archives.

His Discharge No. is given as 360667 and the No. of Identity Certificate as 123433. These records, in conjunction with details from Engineer’s Certificates of Competency cover the period from March 1905 to September 1930, when he would have been 50 yrs old. He may have retired at that time, but I have no evidence to that effect.

1960, at which time his ex-wife is declared a widow
Presumably Mrs Thompson declared Albert as Death in absentia or presumption of death, have a look at this link for an idea of the route that was taken to have him declared dead!
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_in_absentia

I am aware that the Coroner is involved and that the appropriate entry can be made in the Registrars records

Have you found the documentation related to this?

    elsabels,

This is one avenue that had not occurred to me. However, I have explored all UK death registers for Albert Thompson between 1940 and 1960 and not been able to determin which, if any, might be his. In fact, he could have died abroad, as the Wikipedia article suggests.

Presumably Mrs Thompson would have applied to the local coroner in Birkenhead, or does this have to be done centrally? i.e. London?

Also, assuming that Death in absentia was granted, does this mean that the entry for death goes into the normal BMD registers, and what district would be used, or is there a seperate register similar to those for deaths occuring abroad?

    regards

Hello Tony, We were both a bit slow at picking up on that point!

Mu understanding is that it would probably be the local Coroner. the registrars would make a current entry in the records with a hnadwritten entry and code at the tiem the event was though to have occurred. Starting point porbably needs to be Birkenhead /Liverpool Coroners Office to see where the records are stored!

    The Press.......

Presume you have this Court for Divorce and Matrimonial Causes, later Su... J 77/3484/6302 held at national archives.gov.uk

    Hi elsabels,

Yes, I have a copy of all the divorce papers from TNA - it was quite a surprise to find them, since the divorce was another thing I didn't know about!

I've spoken to Birkenhead Coroners office and they have no records pre-1974, so that's a dead end.

Also spoken to L'pool Records Office - they have some archived Coroner's records for Birkenhead, but the researcher wasn't very encouraging, though they can do a search for a fee. I might go back to him if nothing else turns up.

    regards

    so that's a dead end
    like the sense of humour!

Will the RO retrieve the records and let you search them?

What about the press, this could have been a newsworthy local item!

Chester must be quite obliging as I ring up for records that are off site and they are there for me when I get there!
