Thread: William Albert Cutler

I'm hoping someone can help with the bizarre problem I've come up against.

My grandfather was William Albert Cutler, b.1889 in Portsmouth, d. 1981 and he was married to Florence Maude Clarke. His mother was Selina Mary Etherton, b.1870 in Portsmouth also. Her parents were William Etherton, b. about 1837 and Mary (don't know the maiden name) b. about 1843. A great deal of my family came from the Portsea area of Portsmouth. If I therefore search for the marriage of William and Mary bizarrely I come up with the following on FreeBMD:

...which is compounded by the fact that for all of these references there is a Mary involved in the marriage record, i.e:

1863: Mary Mant
1864: Mary Ann Ambrose
1866: Mary A Stephens

As I don't know which is the right marriage I can't buy a certificate to corroborate! I'm amazed there can have been three William Cutlers all possibly linked with Mary's!! Any help with unpicking this would be hugely appreciated.

ok the easiest and surest way will be to buy selinas birth cert

1871 your wiliam is aged 36, a blacksmith and married to a mary ann with selina . He is born SUSSEX
1881 your william a blacksmith married to mary ann with daughter selina says he is born PORTSMOUTH
looking on 1861 for william before marriage :-
i can find william etherton a blacksmith in portsea unmarried aged 25 born WINCHESTER
i can also find william etherton in portsea - a blacksmith born hovington sussex but he is aged 58!! ( your williams father ??)

looking at all the marys in 1861 to see if any of them could be knocked out by birthplace or birthdate etc does not help. they are still all possibles.

apart from your william in 1871 ther is a william etherton married to a marry

i think we can knock out mary ambrose. on same marriage page as her is charles digweed as well as william etherton. on the 1871 he appears married to a mary ann ( the other bride is ann jane)

similarly on same page with mary mann is charles william webb. on the 1871 he appears married to a mary . the other bride is fanny so i think mary mann can be ruled out too

mary a stephens appears on same page with frederick j barber as well as wiliam etherton and rosina carter. looking on 1871 frederick j barber is married to rosina
