    Exclamation William Thomas John Merritt

I am trying to find out more about my great grand father, William Thomas John Merritt, in some documents he was known as Thomas W J Merritt, I guess cause his father and young brother were also called William.

This is what I already know about him.
He was born 7/10/1890 at 102 Magdalen Road, Cowley St John, born William Thomas John Merritt.
died 26/May/1941 in Sheffield, at the time of his death his occupation was a Post Office Cleaner.
He married on the 9/June/1917 at John Street Chapel, Sheffield, at the time of his marriage he was a Private in the 3rd Batt. South Lancashire Reg (8833). and according to his marriage certificate his address was the Signalling School Blundell Sands, Liverpool.

I have found him on the 1891 and 1901 census, but then he just seems to have disappeared after that and reappear in 1917. Has in I have tried searching for him on the 1911 census, and he is the only ancestor I just can't seem to find on that census.

    Any help is greatly appreciated
    regards
    Julia

Hi, the Signalling School Blundell Sands, Liverpool comes under the town of Bootle which is in the metropolitan borough of Sefton. Historically it was part of Lancashire..If its just information about the school itself why don't you contact the Sefton Park Community Library..

    Address:Aigburth Road, Liverpool,L17 4JS,Merseyside, United Kingdom..

Perhaps address the letter to the Archives Section Enquiries..

There is also a Library in Bootle...

Bootle Library Address:220 Stanley Road,Bootle L20 3 EN, United Kingdom

The Bootle LIbrary is affiliated with the system that serves Sefton

    Hello genseek

Have you already posted this query on another Forum probably in 2008? only when I googled the Unit the query came up!

We here on AncestryAid have no problem with that, the more views the better, I am thinking more if another relative is also looking!

Try this link 1914-1918.net/southlancs.htm for the history of the battallion

You need to find the date he enlisted, which could have been as early as 1906!

There is a medal roll card on A******* under Thomas WJ MERRITT, let me know if you require the information from it!

After WW11 it wasn't unusual fro 'demobbed' persons to work for the Civil Service, and in those days the Post Office was part of this...it is only ion more recent years it has been British Telecom (BT)
