Default John Eager born about 1796 lived in Stepney Green St Dunstans

Hi, I am really stuck trying to find out more about my great xxx grandfather! The information I have was that he married Mary Rutland at St Dunstans 25th December 1825. I have the 1841 Census that says he was 45 years old and his wife was 35 years old and they lived at Hackney Road Bethnal Green in 1841. That means he was born about 1796. The letter on the census return giving his country of birth is apparently an S for Scotland. Although this looks more like an I for Ireland. I have the family histry for this family from the wedding in 1825 but nothing before. There children Henry 1829, Maria 1836 where christened at St Leonards on 12 Oct 1826. There is another sister Charlotte born after this date. The spelling may be Egar Eagar or anything similar. I have a copy of the signatures from the 1825 wedding and that shows the name spelt as Eager. I have found the reference to his death and this is September 1846 in Bethnal Green.

I am looking for any leads as to Johns birth and place of birth.

One irregularity is that there was a Jonathon Eager, Born 23rd June 1822 and christened at St Dunstans in August 1822 to a Jonathon and Susan Eager. This couple were married in 1816 at St Dunstans on 3rd October.

    Hello
One irregularity is that there was a Jonathon Eager, Born 23rd June 1822 and christened at St Dunstans in August 1822 to a Jonathon and Susan Eager. This couple were married in 1816 at St Dunstans on 3rd October.
These appear to be a totally unconnected couple! She was a widow in 1816 whne she narried jonathon EAGAR

I have looked at the 1841 census H107 693 10 and various other pages and think that it is a 'S'

    Hello hmoses!

i have looked at the 1841 census you mentioned and my take on it is that John Eager (or Egar as noted in this census) was born in Scotland. If you compare the "S" to Margaret Seagrass and Michael Hogan (from Ireland) to me it looks like an "S". Others on the forum may disagree!

Have you looked on Scotlands People to try and trace John's birth? I have done ony a brief search for this family after the 1841 census with no luck so far. Have you found anyone after this date?

What details do you have from the marriage that you say you have? If you have their marriage certificate, you will know both their Father's names and occupations. if you let us have these details this will be really useful for us to help you in tracking them down! If you don't have their marriage certificate, I would suggest that this is the first thing you should obtain.

London, England, Marriages and Banns, 1754-1921
Name: John Egar Spouse Name: Mary Rutland
    Record Type: Banns
Marriage Bann Date: 04 Dec 1825
Parish: St Dunstan and All Saints, Stepney
    County: Middlesex

States John was a widower on banns

Does it give the fathers names on the details you have of the marriage?

I also believe it is an S for scotland on the 1841 census.

Hi Noggin28. Thanks for your reply. Thanks for the information on the Bans...saying that John was a widdower. Thats the first extra bit of information i have had in months. This may tie in with the Jonathon Eager married to Susan in 1816. She apparently was a widdow and they had a child who was christened at St Dunstans in 1822. I can not find any records of deaths of Susan or the son Jonathon. WHere did you access the bans info? and have you any idea how i can get the parrish records for the wedding of John and Mary at St Dunstans on 25th December 1825? You help is greatly appreciated..cheers Dave Eager Auckland NZ aka hmoses

Hi Elsabels, Thanks for your reply. Thanks for the information on Susan being a widdow in 1816. Where did you find that information? I still think that the jonathon she married in 1816 at St Dunstans may be the same John that remarried in 1825 also at st Dunstans. thanks for your support cheers Dave Eager Auckland NZ aka hmoses

Hi Rubina, thanks for your reply. I agree that its probabily an S for Scotland on the Census return. I found a typed transcript of this somewhere and that alos said it was Scotland. From the date of the wedding in 1825 I have all the census returns and details of births marriages etc for the family. But going backwards i am stuck at 1825 and this wedding. The only details that i have are a copy of the two names "John Eager" and "Mary Rutland" from the parrish records at St Dunstans. I dont have the parrish record of this marriage and have not been able to find any more information. Any ideas where i can find the marriage details? Your help is greatly appreciated cheers DaveEager Auckland NZ aka hmoses

Hi Lady Marrion, thanks for your reply. What is a "PM"? Yes my family have ties with the east london churchs of St Dunstans in Stepney Green and St Leonards in Shoreditch. Both the churches are in the nursury rhyme orangers and lemons..."when will that be, said the bells of stepney" and "when i grow rich said the bells of Shoreditch". I have the family tree form the wedding of John and Mary at St Dunstans on christmas day in 1825 but nothing before this date. Thanks for your support cheers Dave Eager Auckland NZ aka hmoses
