Thread: Edwards Family Mystery

Hello I am trying to find out what happened to the sisters of my Great Grandfather Henry Colston Edwards, as he was born in Birmingham on the 14th of September 1870 to George and Mary Ann Edwards formerly Colston, they also had the following family!

Helen Elizabeth Edwards born 07/11/1868 Leigh Worcestershire
married John Stephen Gillitt on the 02/06/1903 at Aston Register Office
had John Henry Gillitt on the 18/05/1905 at 39 Cheatham Street Aston

John Stephen Gillitt died in 1918 at Aston aged 50 Years
Helen Elizabeth Gillitt died in 1945 at Weston Super Mare aged 75 Years
John Henry Gillitt died in 1990 at Birmingham aged 84 Years

Then came my Henry Colston Edwards born 14th September 1870 at Aston
died 14th June 1960

Kate Edwards born 10th March 1873 at Aston then dissappers

George William Edwards born 14th December 1874 at Aston
died 23rd August 1875 at Aston

Margaret Edwards born 24th August 1876 at Aston
died 21st June 1883 aged 6 Years at Aston

Alice Edwards born 04th October 1878 at Aston is on the 1891 Census in the Aston Union Workhouse with her Mother then appears as a boarder on the 1901 Census in the household of William Beech at 229 Aston Road then dissappers.

Marion Edwards born 22/10/1883 at Aston is also on the 1891 Census in the Aston Union Workhouse with her Widowed Mother then dissappers

This has been a complete mystery since before my Father was born in 1943 and he died in 2006 unaware of what had happened, I have been searching since 1998 and have found nothing bar the above, the only other thing to say is that the following is what happened to the parents of the above:-

George Edwards died on the 24th of September 1889 at Aston
Mary Ann Edwards died on the 29th of November 1895 in the Aston Union Workhouse at Erdington.

I am appealing for help re Kate, Alice and Marion Edwards as to where they went and what happened, did they get married, or die as Edwards or has something else happened, I am totally stumped!

Some of the information needed will come from the 1911 census, and in line with other sites / forums we are not permitted to undertake lookups as it may infringe copyright etc.

If you have already looked at the census perhaps you could post the info

I have not been able to trace my relatives since the 1891 Census, and as I know that Kate Edwards was born on the 10th March 1873 in Aston, I can not seem to find her on the 1891 Census, then we have Alice Edwards who was born on the 4th October 1878 again in Aston and lastly Marion Edwards who was born on the 22nd October 1883 again in Aston, I have just realised that on the night of the 1891 census Kate Edwards was aged 21 years and was residing in 85 Frederick Road in the household of Harry A Tennison, however it has been impossible to move to the next census the 1901 as yet, and as such it is impossible to know at the present time if Kate was either Married or not on the 1911 Census, which is a highly likely possibility, or see could have left the Birmingham area altogether.

The other two been Alice and Marion were on the 1891 Census in Erdington District Workhouse, I do not know where the records ended up nor have I been able to trace Marion Edwards since the 1891 census however I have found that Alice Edwards aged 22 years on the 1901 Census as a Domestic Servant, to Henry Johnson residing at 81 Ballsall Heath Road Erdington, this is all I know and to know where either Alice or Marion were on the night of the 1911 census and also if they were both married by this time it is again unfotunately impossible to know, and again had they left the Birmingham area.
