    Default rintoul - from scotland

Looking for some help wth Rintoul surname.

trying to find the connection with fraser and gordon to the surname rintoul.
I believe family from edinburgh, i found an entry in scotland at george square for james gordon fraser rintoul 1937-1993. but i cant find the parents names, i suspect the mothers maiden name was fraser, as scottish tradition for mothers maiden name as middle name.

everything ive looked up says its a difficult surname to research which doesnt help.

any ideas or help would be appreciated.
    thanks

It is indeed a very unusual name. Have you tried the guild of one name studies? if you google you will get the web address

    Hi lisabyrne!

    Out of interest:
From Surnames of Scotland by George F Back

"RINTOUL, Rentoul - from the old lands of Rintoul in the parish of Orwell, Kinross-shire. Between 1362-67 there is mention of an enclosed estate bearing the name Rentoule. The surname rarely occurs in public record. The family have avoided any disctincion.

Mount Rintoul in New Zealand is called after this family name. The place name appears as Rentowle in Gordon's map of Keanross-shyre, 1642."

None of this helps with your current research but it gives you a bit of history and shows it to be an od scottish name. As the name originated in Orwell this will point you in the right direction when search much earlier ancestors. As bigdon says, if you google Rintoul you get a lot of hits.

thank you. i have looked at the obvious places - most rintoul geneology online i can see is from canada and australia, have looked at genforum and ancestry , freereg and freebmd and scotlands people etc.. and only found one entry with 'Gordon Fraser' as middle name - cant link this to a marriage of rintoul with gordon or fraser. I also found the origins of the name and the town but again no link with gordon / fraser or any think else i have. I think the problem is i am not back far enough. will wait till that certificate comes from SP and that should give me another lead, was hoping that someone with ancestry access (i dont have an account at the moment) may be able to get a bit more info from the entry on there for James G F R .

i will wait for the certificate, was just hoping to get a lead as i have the bug for it ! (guess im a bit impatient too.)

    thanks again for your help
    best wishes and Kind regards

I realise this is an old post, so you may have found your answers, but I am a Rintoul from Canada. My family originated from Ayrshire, and there are a lot of James. Here is the info. my uncle has found:
