THOMAS JOYCE.

I am needing help in finding THOMAS JOYCE. He was born about 1838 but I have no idea where and when. He came to South Africa in about 1863 to join the Mounted Police in Pietermaritzburg and in a court hearing for leaving a post, he says that he was with the Metropolitan Police in England. I have tried Met Police in London but did not find much. He married and died in Pietermaritzburg. As you can see, I dont have much info. The family story is that he came from Ireland but I have no proof. Thanks for the help. Moyra Joyce, Bedford, South Africa

Can you tell us his parents names if known as that might be a good starting point? Does his Death Cert state where he was born? Some Death Certs do state parents names..Although my Father was born in London he died in New-Zealand and on his Death Cert it mentions his Mothers maiden name..Australian Death Certs are the same but I am not sure if thats the case with South African Death Certs? Checking freebmd for Thomas Joyce born 1838 I started my search from December quarter of 1837 through to 1842 and there was 22 entries for that name for different locations and counties throughout England.. I have also checked Family Search using the Pilot search method and the BETA search and there are a number of entries for Thomas Joyce born Ireland about 1838 but most died in America. I think if we are to progress any further with this search we need a little more information..Have you thought about contacting the National Archives in regards to Thomas?

Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately, I do not have his parents names or his date and place of birth so this is really a brick wall. We have death notices here is South Africa but cannot find one for Thomas so that does not help. Thanks again.
