Thread: Help with John RICHARDSON

I have hit a brick wall with my great x 3 grandfather, all i know is that he was born about 1786 either in Hampshire or possibly Wiltshire his name is John Richardson.

His son William Richardson my great x 2 grandfather was born around 1829, according to the 1871 he was born in Hawley Hants, but on the 1881 census it is showing as U K, which i think is unknown.

William enrolled with Militia at Faversham age 23 a labourer Reg. No. 418, he was at the Artillary barracks Woolwich at the time of his marriage on the 21 Mar 1855. This is where i have found his fathers name, which is John Richardson, a Labourer, as he name was on the marriage cert.

He re-enrolled in 1859 Reg No. 2579, and again in 1865 Reg. 4133.

I have not been able to find his attestation papers which would have helped find out his parents name and where they were all born.

I found a Richardson family on the 1841 and 1851 census which i though matched, but this is at Vernham Dean and is about 40 miles away from Hawley, Hants where William is supposed to have been born, it shows a John Richardson age 55 (Agr. Labourer) born Conbolt Wiltshire, wife MAry, age 50 born Fosbury, Wiltshire, children Pheobe age 20, Harriet age 20, William age 15 (born 1826) a Stephenage 13. On the 1851 census also in Vernham Dean -sub district Hurstbourne Tarrant, shows a John Richardson age 70, Mary age 64, Pheobe age 31 and Stephen age 21 born Upton Hants, no sign of my William who would have been about 25.

But i did find a William Richardson, a Prisoner age 22 (gen labourer) born Chippenham, Wiltshire, at House of Correction, Cold bath Fields, so this could possibly be him but he joined the Militia in Faversham on the 16th November 1852, so after being in prison could have moved to Kent and joined the Army.

What i need is to find out Williams definate place of birth, which should have been on his military records, also a baptism for him would find out his mothers name, and then i could work out where he was born and find the right census for him, and hopefully find out more about John Richardson.

Hopefully someone could help me and perhaps have access to records that i cannot get to see, I would be most grateful for any help or advise as i have been looking on and off for quite a few years.

Thanks for taking time to look for information for my Richardson family, unfortunately the ones you have come across dont fit.

William Richardson was born (1829)

Between 1852 and 1868 he had joined the Militia and i have all his details up to his death in 1885 in Canterbury, Kent.

He married in 1855 in Woolwich Barracks and his father on the marriage certificate was a John Richardson

After leaving the army he settled in Canterbury and i have him on the 1881 census in Canterbury with his family.

I am stuck with finding out where he was on the 1841 and 1851 census as i have stated earlier i found a Richardson family in 1841 and 1851 but they were from Verham Dean and i am sure these are not the right ones. (But after saying that if he has put his wrong place of birth on the 1871 census this very well could be them)

I need to confirm Williams date of birth and where exactly where he was born, i know the places that relatives put on census are not alway correct, i have many that i know exactly where they were born but because they had moved to a different area had put that down in stead of the real place of birth. They dont make it easy.

If i could find out exactly who his parents were and the area he was born in i could move on from there, I dont know if anyone has any access to military records as his date of birth and parents names should be on that.

You need to find his Attestation record to establish his year of birth and palce,both are ususally shown on this record.

Can you state what Basttallion etc. he joined I cannot readily pick him up inder the number quoted, sometimes these change as their career progresses or they change unit and what is the year and name of his wife for the marriage
