    Exclamation STEINHOFIL to STANFIELD

    Hi
My brick wall is so high its getting harder to climb!! I am in need of a LOT of HELP from you please in finding my illusive Granfather and my husbands Gt. Granparents???

Starting with ROGER'S family we have recently found that some time ago (we can only assume before or during WW1 )the family name had been changed from
    STEINHOFIL to STANFIELD
ROGER's father was ALLEN born in 1921 in TOXTETH PARK LIVERPOOL
ALLEN'S father was WILLIAM H STANFIELD born c1894 and was either a carpenter or someone working with wood (ALLEN's Mother was ANNIE MASSEY born c1894) we believe all born in the Liverpool area.
ALLEN had a brother RAYMOND C born 1923 in WEST DERBY LIVERPOOL. They both understand their father had something to do with a Sawmill (could have been a family business) in Wigan Rd NEW SPRINGS in WIGAN????? I cannot find this place.
We have no other information about them to be sure of tracing the right family?? PLEASE CAN YOU HELP???

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE CAN YOU HELP ME????????????????????

    many thanks (Hopefully) in advance
    Val

    Hello
Googling the surname STEINHOFIL suggests that there may be at least one other person researching this family name!

Not uincommon before WW1 for names to be anglicised, try looking in the Liverpool paper fro a notice advising that the family are to be known as.....
If they applied for Naturalisetion and a name change this would be posted at this site: london-gazette.co.uk

As regards a business in Wigan have a look at this site, wiganworld.co.uk or contact the Wigan library Local History Section

This link may be of help re the sawmill, Val.

Worrall's Wigan and District Directory, 1881 :: wiganworld

The area was riddled with collieries, all of which needed pit props etc, and I also think an amount of (canal) boat building went on, so there were a few.
