    Exclamation Jamaican Brick Wall

My Grandfather Joseph Alexander Miller arrived in Sydney Australia approx 1879 as a Ship's Cook.

He had 9 children and on each birth cert. he stated different places for his own place of birth: eg. Halifax, Canada; Halifax, Jamaica; Kingston; Kingston, Jamaica; Portsmouth, England; etc. etc.

He claimed his father (Joseph) was a Mariner who married a Margaret Turner in St. Ann Bay, Jamacia. He also claimed to have 3 sisters in Kingston: Annie, Sarah and Hattie.

NO evidence turns-up for this Miller family in Jamaica (so far) so if anyone can help it will make an Old Age Pensioner very releived to know his roots.

    Hello

What is Joseph Alexander MILLER's year of birth and do you know the name of the ship he arrived in Australia on

Where did he marry and are all the children born in Australia

There is an interesting entry on Familysearch.org.uk

On the homwe page enter JAM country Jamica, scroll down to pedigree, you can then order and look at the info shown.

Check out your nearest LDS at Library on the tool bar

    Default Joseph born Jamaica

    Hi,
As far as I know Joseph A Miller was born in Jamaica - possibly Kingston and family oral history says that he had 3 sisters living in Kingston circa 1916-1930.

If the Joseph you found is mine, then he would have been 97 years when he died in 1939.
Also he would have been 37 years when he is supposed to have arrived in Sydney Australia. I can find no information on what ship he arrived on in Australian shipping records.
Further he would have been 52 years when his first child was born and 71 years when his last child was born.
SO, I don't think they can be the same although the 1813 Joseph could? be has father being 41 years when my Joseph was born.

    Thanks for your help,

    Charles

    Default Joseph and website

    Hi again Elsabels,

I can't find what ship he arrived on in the NSW Shipping records.
I suspect that he "jumped ship"

    Re Familysearch.org.uk
I can only find Familysearch .org in the USofA.
    Did you mean that site?

    Thanks,
    Charles

    Hello

I have just typed in Familysearch.org and got to the site, it is the Church of the Latterday Saints (LDS site) search site of digitalised Parish records, if you go to beta.familysearch you will find there are census and other searches worldwide on line...

I gave you the info to search on the front sheet, most of us go to search records and the info you need will not be shown there.......

Let us know how you get on

Hi Chris -in the 1861 census the above family minus the son can be found and this family can also be found in the 1871 census after which it is possible they die before the 1881 census.

In the 1941 census I found this family
1841 HO107/1426/FMiller Fisher Street, Swansea St Marys, Swansea

    Default Mariner Miller in Jamaica

    Hi,

    Thanks for your interest.

My GrandDad JA Miller died in Sydney Australia 1939 age 85. His sisters were in Kingston in the 1920-1930's

He was a ship's Cook and arrived in Sydney circa 1879. His death Cert. states he was "In the Colony" approx 60 years.

I don't hold out much hope of tracking these Miller family.

I see on your site that you have an interest in Tailors.

Can you help with a John Garty who gave as "Sureties" for his Bond (as a Tailor) to the East India Co at Fort St. George, Madras in 1830 the following people:

Edward Dumsday, Shephards Market, May Fair, Tailor.
Samuel Dodson, Peters Street, Soho, Tailor.

I presume that he may have been an apprentice or worked for them in London.

I can't track his birth down and any help via his trade may help.

    Charles
