    Exclamation William Miles Green

    Hello,

I am trying to find the baptism of William Miles Green born Castleton near Sherborne, Dorset circa 1800.

I believe that William Miles Green’s parents were William Green and Charlotte Walters who married in Castleton in 1798. William was in the 11th Light Dragoons and went to Holland in 1799 to fight against Napoleon’s army. Upon returning to England the regiment headed north.

I believe that William Miles Green was born whilst William Green was in Holland, and then baptised when the regiment had returned to England, but I don’t know where to look. In 1814, William Green retired from the army and in 1841 was living in Sherborne. William Miles Green married in Castleton in 1820.

I have a website which contains additional information about William Miles Green and William Green

Any help linking the two together would greatly appreciated.

    Many Thanks,

    Philip Green.

    Hello

This is the only entry I can find for a William GREEN of 11th Ligth Dragoon Guards TNA WO97 /56/60

William GREEN Private b Harkerry Gloucester

joined at 19 ,and served 21 years 132 days and was discharged 23/07/1818

    Briefly
Description, 5'6" tall, hazel eyes, brown hair and a fair complexion

He serves in 1794 and 1795 .....and in Holland 1799 and the Peninsular Wars in 1811-1812

The card indicates he was 'worn out with long service'

He was a good soldier and served with zeal and fidelity in Holland

Before I look for other information, can you confirm you consider this to be your ancestor

    Elsabels,

I can confirm that this is the William Green who I believe is my ancestor. I have also identified him in the following army muster rolls.

    WO12/978 - 1799
Jan – Mar: He was on detachment in Sherborne, which is when he got married in neighbouring Castleton. The parish record has the date of the marriage as 18 Feb 1798, however, this was obviously 1799 as one of the witnesses (John Ellis) was also in the 11 Light Dragoons and on detachment in Sherborne at the time.

    Apr – Jun: Dorchester Barracks
    Jul – Aug: Cantebury Barracks
    Sep: Ichagon
    Oct: Embarked for England
    Nov: ?
    Dec: Ipswich

    WO12/979 – 1800

    Jan – Jul: Ipswich
    Aug: ?
    Sep: Oxford (Detached to Banbury)
    Oct: Doncaster (Worksop)
    Nov – Dec: Newcastle (Durham)

    WO12/980 – 1801

    Jan – May: Newcastle (Durham)
    Jun – Dec: York (Beverly)

    WO12/981 – 1802
    Jan – May: York (Beverly)
    Jun: Putney (Ware)
Jul – Dec: Hounslow Barracks (Windsor)

    WO12/982 – 1803
    Jan – May: York (Beverly)
    Jun: Putney (Ware)
Jul – Dec: Hounslow Barracks (Windsor)

According to the 1851 Census (HO107/1532 F392 P19 S25) William Miles Green was born in Castleton circa 1799.

The problem I have is not knowing where to look for the baptism. I have checked both Sherborne and Castleton and couldn't find anything in those, so I am guessing it was somewhere with the regiment.

does anyone know what the policy for baptising soldier's children was in those days - did they just go to the local church wherever they happened to be, or did the army have their own method?

Once again Elsabels, thank you for replying.

It's been a while since I have visited genuki.co.uk, so I will re-visit the links.

Any idea what the policy was for army baptisms in those days? When I have watched Sharpe, it appears that for some of the time abroad they had their families with them. Would the babies born abroad have been baptised abroad?

    Regards,

    Philip Green

    Hello

It is likely that they would have been baptised by the Army Chaplain, there fore the entry would appear within the Archives of the Army Unit

The other thing is that the digitalisation by the LDS of Church records is still ongoing, I recently discovered that a pariah I was looking for in Cheshire has not been'done' this may be your case, the localRecord office will be able to assist you in this.....well Chester RO advised me!
