    Exclamation John Tilley"

Big Help Wonderful Idea ! My brick wall is looking for any information about ggg grdfather "John Tilley" and his ancestors. However I know his son "Joseph Rubini Tilley" was born 1845 in Newport, Monmouthshire, Wales. The parents John Tilley and Mary Ann Tilley (maiden name Sugden but had 2 previous marriages to William Marsden and then Joseph Ellis). Mary Ann was widowed in 1838, so her marriage to John Tilley must have been between 1838 and 1845. John Tilley's occupation on his son's marriage certificate is listed as "musician". In the 1851 census Mary Ann is listed as married although John does not appear to be living with the family which consists of Mary Ann Tilley (or Telley) her children Emma Marsden, Sidney Ellis, Martha Ellis and Joseph Rubini Tilley. However in the 1861 census records and until her death she is listed as widow, so I beleive John tilley must have died between 1851 to 1861. Mary Ann is always listed as "organist or music teacher", so I would understand the connection between her and her 3rd husband John. However I cannot find a John Tilley that would seem to fit into that occupation.

    Hello

The interesting use of and an unusual name RUBINI, relates to an operatic singer...........

2 previous marriages to William Marsden and then Joseph Ellis
Can you let us know where and when the earlier marriages occurred and do you know when the second husband died!

Mary ANN SUGDEN was b Northwram Yorkshire

Martha Ellis was born 1840 in Holywell Flintshire presumably

Joseph Rubinin TILLY was the next child born in 1845 in Monmouthshire

Sidney Ellis is shown as a MAriner, it is likely that John Tilly was a mriner as well!

    elsabels

    The marriage was 1840 /1845

    The death

    Hello!

Don't know if you have this Mary Ellis, 1941. She doesn't live with her husband so perhaps he has died.

Mary Ellis - Prof of Music - 25 not born in county
Sidney Ellis - 6 born in county
Martha Ellis - 4 born in county
Emma Marsden - 11 not born in county

Also found a death of John Tilley, Newport in 1945.

    Yes this is the family!
Mary Anne's first marriage to William Marsden was before 1830 as daughter Emma Marsden was born 1830 in
    Manchester, Lancashire.
2nd marriage to Joseph Ellis was 9 Sept 1833 in Flintshire Wales. He died 23 Jan 1838.
I beleive Mary Anne Sugden came from a very musical family - I beleive her brother was Daniel Holgate Sugden musician and music teacher. Halifax Yorkshire. So I am guessing why her son carried the "Rubini" name.
I am wondering if the John Tilley in gaol in 1851 could be him. What is a drapper? or is it draper? Or maybe the 1845 death is him?
I am also wondering if the marriage cert listing Joseph Rubini Tilley's father as a musician is a lie! I know my father who was illegitimate has his grandfathers name and occupation listed on his marriage cert as his father! Where to go from here????

Hi - a draper is someone who used to work with cIoth or materiaI - and soId to a taiIor or some one who wanted to sew- the term is not used nowadays - perhaps haberdashery is a bit more understandabIe but even these have aImost gone- so its mainIy anything to do with sewing - cottons threads -needIes- wooI perhaps- doIIy mushrooms for darning socks etc - hey I remember them - quite possibIy working in the areas of cotton miIIs in the north and got the materiaI straight of the Iine in roIIs and Iengths - and even in ScotIand for the tartins- how I know is that my mum was a miIiiner in the war times and my auntie stiII is a taiIoress. There are not many materiaI shops around now unIess they are near a miII or perhaps in Iondon or the markets in towns etc. Hope that heIps

    Hi Madison

I am assuming you don't have Joseph's birth certificate? Found this potential:

Joseph Tilley June 1845, Newport Monmouthshire, Vol 26 Page 115 - you will have his birth date from his Marriage cert so this should help you get his correct birth cert.

It occurs to me that John might be the name he was "known as" rather than his given name. I know that this was the name Joseph gave on his marriage cert but this may because he was commonly called this! If this is the case you have little chance of pinning him down! If you can get Joseph's birth cert it would confirm this (hopefully it will give his Mum's name as well!)

I do have Joseph's birth cert. born 19 May 1845, 33 LLanarth Street, Newport, County of Monmouth - Father John Tilley - occupation Professor of Music. Mother's name Mary Ann Tilley formerly Sugden. It is John Tilley I cannot seem to find before or after. If the census are correct he must have died between 1851 and 1861 when Mary Ann listed herself as a widow. On the birth cert for Jospeh it lists his father's occupation as professor pf music however this is also the mother's occupation in the 1841, 1851 and 1861 census. She seems to move around a bit.
Lucky for me her son Joseph Rubini Tilley gave many of his children their maternal grandmother's maiden anme ' Sugden" making it very easy to find them. My grandfather was Joseph Athelstane Sugden Tilley. But John seems to be hard to find
