In trying to research my ancestors I keep running into a rather infuriating "brick wall". The problem is that there is no father mentioned on my mother's birth certificate, and my mother never really talked about him other than to say that he was a deep sea diver {which, knowing her tendency to "embellish" the truth, may very well be completely untrue} and never ever even mentioned his name. The result of this is that I do not know who my maternal grandfather was, and as my mother passed away in 1983 and I know of no relatives who could help me in this, it seems that this proverbial brick wall may well prove impossible to break down.
My mother's name was Elizabeth Violet Frances Nicholas and she was born on December 4th 1909 in St.Erth.
My grandmother was Margery Nicholas and she was born on march 26th 1872 also in St.Erth.
I have already contacted the OPC for St.Erth, Darcel Kornachuk, in this matter, but the only information she could give me was that at the baptism of my aunt Laura, who was born on February 6th 1907 and baptised on May 1st 1907, and who was buried on August 30th 1919, there was a mr. Hocken or Hocking listed as the father. His occupation was given as water???? {apparently both the name and the occupation were not quite legible on the copies of the records she used for entering the data into het computer}. She suggested this person might also be my grandfather. I have Laura’s birth certificate, which, like my mother’s, does not mention a father. The other bit of information she had for me was that my mother was baptised on July 9th 1919, which seems a bit late as she would have been almost 10 years old. When I queried this date and suggested that 1919 might be a typographical error, and should possibly read 1910 she answered me that 1919 was indeed the date she had in the files on her computer, but that she unfortunately could not check if this was correct as she no longer had the photocopies from which she had extracted the information.
The 1911 census has both my mother and my aunt living with their uncle and aunt Philip James Francis, and Elizabeth Laura Francis {néé Nicholas} at Churchtown St.Erth. As the occupation of Margery is given as "domestic servant" on both my mother's and my aunt's birth certificates, this leads me to assume that she lived on the premises where she worked and could not keep her children there.
If you could give me an idea who my grandfather was, and what the date of death of my aunt was {I presume it must have been late August 1919} or could give me any suggestion on how, or where, I might find out, I would be very pleased to know.
Regards,
Nick
