Default Anyone find me Mark Cook born Romsey Hampshire in 1841?

Dear Ancestry Aid. My Ancestor is a Mark Cook who married an Elizabeth Kelleway. He was born 1823 in Romsey Hampshire. She was born in the Isle of Wight, Ryde in 1826.

In 1861 and 1851 I have then married.

I would like to find him in 1841. He would be about 18 years old. This is before he was married. A relative sent me an Isle of Wight image from 1841 where he is the son of a James Cook and a Jane but he is only 12 in the census which is too young and anyway I think he is more likly to be near Romsey if he is with his family.

    Thanks for your time. Neil.

My guess is that your relative is correct about the Isle of Wright Image from 1841 and that Mark Cook's birth date in that census is incorrect. I say this because the 1861 Census shows Mark Cook, age 38, born Romsey, Hampshire, England, and his wife Elizabeth living in Haylands, Ryde, Isle of Wright. (see below for details). In the 1851 census, this family was living in the Channel Islands (see details below).

    Hope this helps.

there are quite a few trees on ancestry with parents as james and jane, although none appear to have attached sources. do you have the marriage cert to give fathers name and occupation. was that his first marriage - first child appears to predate it?

Thank you both for your very helpful comments. I haven't gone as far as marriage certificates, that may well be the next move. And thankyou Mardon for checking all the censuses for me. I will crack this sometime!

    Surferneil

Mark COOK + Elizabeth KELLEWAY Sep 1849 IoW 8 386 order from gro.gov.uk the cost £9.25, this will give you the name of each persons father and the job, together with witnesses who may be relatives, a more positive approach to finding the parentage of Mark & Elizabeth

Alternatively look at the parish registers for the IoW to see if the marriage details can be obtained for the price of photocopying and postage!

That's great Elsabels, I will definitely order the certificate. I have managed most of my research so far without parting with much cash, but I think the time has come to open the old wallet!! Great advice as always!

Even I begrudge spending money on certificates, which is why I always look to see if a church wedding as the copying & Postage is well what around a £1......you could always try IoW record office, at Chester they allow 10 minutes free look up time and ca nusually find specific info and send it you

I have recently received and email from a very helpful lady called Ann Barratt who seems to know everything about the Isle of Wight. She agrees that unfortunately it is a registry office wedding, having looked at various records, so the only way forward is to buy the certificate which I have ordered this morning! I will think of it as £9 for my great great grandparents' Christmas present. I hope it lists the father when it arrives!!
