    Exclamation Mary Ann Ada Long

My grandmother was a Home Child from England. Her name was Mary Ann Ada Long, born October 7, 1883. She was put into an orphanage by her step-mother, separate from her sister Bessie and brother Tom, then sent to Canada as a young girl. She married James Thompson (July 10, 1869 - March 21, 1967) in Manitoba on June 1, 1917. She died young on January 13, 1933, leaving behind two young daughters. Since the girls were so young, Grandma had not shared many of the hardships she had endured but Mom remembered that she cried whenever she talked about her past. Grandma died when her oldest daughter was 13 so any information was lost. Now that my mother, Ellen Elizabeth (Thompson) Morrice has passed away, even the small amount she remembered is lost to us. My brother, sister and I are now the oldest generation in our family and I would love to find out more about this brave woman who is responsible for all of us being here.
Any help would be MOST appreciated! Isabel (Morrice) Keating

    Hello Isabel

    Birth for Mary Ann A LONG q4 ( reg Oct-Dec) 1883 Camberwell 1d 789, certificates cost £9.25 from gro.gov.uk

This will give you details of Mary's parentage.

I have had a look at the 1891 census and cannot readily identify Mary and her siblings Thomas & Bessie ( is this her name or nickname), so the certificate is a must to be able to successfully identify the correct LONG family!

Have you looked at this site to see if Mary is listed www.bifhsgo.ca

i am a little puzzled because you appear to have a tree on ancestry which gives her parents as harry william long died feb 21 1906 and ellen ann elizabeth who dies 14 july 1889. Do you know this for a fact- it would give us alot more to work on if so.

bride = harriet boyden or bagden ( it gives both) . this would fit in with harriet being stepmother

    Hi there,
Just thought I'd put my 2 cents worth in. There is a Mary A. Long arriving in Canada on March 19, 1893, she is aboard a home child ship. This fits in nicely with her coming here as a child. I might have her on the 1901 & 1911 census also, but she gives a different birth date. I'm also wondering if she was put into a workhouse before coming here, there is a Mary A. Long in a workhouse on the 1891 England census.

Thanks, I wasn't able to log on for a while. I have gotten confirmation that the parentage I have is right. My sister found some information we didn't know we had. I appreciate all the info from you.

I don't know about the workhouse, she came from Miss Rye's home.
