This is another of those things that has been bugging me for years and after trawling registers and Bishop's Transcripts, appealing for help through Family History Societies, searching IGI, the Hugh Wallis site, Family search and more Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire websites than I care to think about I am no nearer to finding out what I need to know.
In 1789 in DBY Bolsover a certain Valentine THORNALLY married a lady called Mary. The name THORNALLY appears in a variety of guises but I am 99% sure that he is the son of Valentine THORNHILL and Ann THORPE who were married by Licence in NTT Norton Cuckney in 1753. The two places are only a very few miles apart.
But who was Mary ? The Bolsover registers are in a parlous state, great chunks are missing but I did find the marriage mentioned above where Mary's name is given as HERNDALE and she does make an attempt to sign her name which to me reads as HRNDALL. In the BT's her name is given as FERNDALE and on the Hugh Wallis site as STERNDALE. Both FERNDALE and HERNDALE are very thin on the ground but the Family Search Beta site does have a number of Mary STERNDALE baptisms mostly in the counties of Lancashire and Derbyshire.
Is there a remote chance that anyone here is researching these families ?
Mary THORNERLEY, child of this marriage marries Benjamin RODGERS and they live DBY Staveley. My mother's maiden name was RODGERS and she descends from this couple.
