    Exclamation William Illingworth

Any help would be great--- have hit a brick wall and have been looking for a way round but with no success.
I am looking for my Granddad William Illingworth born in Bradford around 1872 .
I have his marriage cert from 1910 William aged 36 Married Sarah Harriet Smith (i have traced the smith family back to 1871 census) on the cert it says Williams father is John Illingworth,so i have searched the 1881-1891-1901 census and cannot find a John illingworth that has a William as his son. the nearest i have found is a Thomas illingworth that has a William born 1872 as his son.
I am starting to wonder if John on the marriage cert might not be his fathers real name just the name everyone called him (is that possible to list the wrong name).

Any help of where to go from here and what to try next would be great
    Thanks
    Colin

Yes Colini I believe that is very possible...Although a Marriage Certificate is a legal documnet there was no way for sure of knowing someones exact birth name and if they were telling the truth in regards to their name/names. Unlike today people had no form of identification to validate their identity...
..My Grandparents married in 1913 and one of the witnesses gave a false surname..My Grandfather also stated his own Fathers name was ??????? when it wasn,t.. Hope that answers your question..

    Hi Colin.

Just to endorse Marion's post above.

I always believed my gt grandfather to be called John Gaskell, as this was the name he appeared under on all censuses between 1861 and 1901. When I located his birth, marriage and death however, I found his real name to have been Robert Gaskell.

Another scenario, though perhaps less likely, may be the same as that I found with a gt grandmother on another line. When she married, she gave her father's name as George Zimmer, when it was in fact Conrad Zimmer. Her reason for this I think was the fact that the marriage would appear to have been clandestine, as she was a) Under full age, and b) Pregnant at the time. She did have a brother called George, who was almost 20 yrs older than her, and I have often wondered if he gave her away at the wedding, purporting to be her father.

    Hello Colin

Yes we all seem to have brickwalls like this....incoreect info on a certificate, my family is no different....

    1) have you found your William Illingworth on the 1911 census*? if so you can post details, we cannot do look ups!
    2) what is his employment
    3) what employment did he give on his marriage certificate of himself and father?
    4) what was his status on marriage?

Illingworth is a common surname in Yorkshire, what other areas have you considered.......

Have you been in touch with the Bradford FHS they have a very active membership in the area secretary@bradfordfhs.org.uk or bradfordfhs.org.uk their records will be comprehensive, I used them in the mid 1980's! ironically, they turned up a business connection with the research family and ILLINGWORTH!

    * Most library's / Record offices have free access to this

Thanks for the info that his fathers name might not be correct on the marriage cert.

Answers to Elsebels questions---This you are gonna love and be totally confused like myself.
William lived at whitley street dewsbury and when he married Sarah they moved into the house in whitley street--i did a search for Illingworth on the 1911 Census and got no results.i then did an address search and found William & Sarah living at whitley street BUT he has put there surname down as HUTTON.
All other info on the census is correct William 36 Sarah 35- married under 1 Year- William works as a Window Cleaner (that was also on marriage cert also)
On the Marriage cert His job is Window cleaner He gave his father as John who is a Joiner.
William is down on the cert as a widower ( i havent managed to find his 1st marriage)

My dad was born in 1913 at whitley street i have his birth cert with William & Sarah as his parents surname Illingworth.
So i dont know why he used a different surname on the 1911 census (unless he was in some sort of trouble)

I have just last month join the Brafordfhs and hoping it will help in my search.

    Cheers from a confused member....lol
    Colin
