    Exclamation Thomas Brown

One huge brick wall I have is Thomas Brown [yes a very common name unfortunately] b approx 1750 Northumberland M Ann Grant b approx 1745 m at St Mary's Woodhorn on 19/12/1768, Witnesses were Robert Gordon & Henry Blyth. After their marriage they settled in Cresswell, NBL. They had 14 children
Ann Died 7th Jan 1800 & is buried at Woodhorn, But I am not sure about when Thomas died. There are 2 likely deaths - on in nov 1799 and the other 1817. (woodhorn Bihop's Transcripts for Woodhorn] Ann's notice of death and burial states Widow of Thomas Brown a fisherman of Cresswell. Parish record states Wife of Thomas Brown......... This makes it even harder to find a correct year of birth & death. I am assuming they both came from Northumberland. On the records it does state both of this parish. But I have hunted high and low for information. There are so many Thomas Brown's. I assume as a Fisherman - [as were the males after him for a good 125 years in Cresswell and later Newbiggin] he perhaps was born on or close to the coast. - But I do not know about him or his wife Ann prior to their marriage. They are x 6g Grandparents. I would like to know a little bit about them and who their parent's were if possible . Any help /suggestions would be well and truly appreciated. I did find a birth entry for An Ann Grant b.1747 in Scarborough, but I do not think this is her. Thanks for reading

    Hello PJay

Ann's death 07/01/1800 the prime record should be the most accurate, i.e the PArish Register, as you probably know the Bishops Transcripts are copy's of the originals that were sent to the Bishops Office Annually!

Sadly for you this sounds like working your way thro' the Parish Registers.

I was looking at some parish registers at Chester RO last week and at the end of June came across the note 'copied for BT to here!'

The other titbit I learnt was that not ALL Cheshire registers have been digitalised yet by the LDS, so it may be worth enquiring at Northumberland

Hi & thanks for reply. I wish I had ancestors with more unusual names - it is a problem with there been so many Thomas Brown's. There are quite a few Brown's at Cresswell [2 families] I think so it is even more difficult getting the right family!. I thought about the transcript I had for a death fo him in 1817 age 65 which would make his y.o.b about 1752 but I still can't find a birth that seems to be suitable and that would make him only 16 when he married would this be fairly common? i have some ancestors who appeared to be married at 18, but it does seem so young.

    Hello PJ

Maybe you need to look at these 2 family's piecing their units together and you may come up with an answer.

Kid yourself not about the more unusual surname, i married one and when you get back to the parish records in an area, it is still difficult working out who belongs to who etc.
