    Exclamation Frederick William Wood

A big stumbling block over last 12 months. Army information on husbands grandfather. FREDERICK WILLIAM WOOD born 1854 in Kensington. Joined Army circa 1876. 67th Regiment of Foot, Royal Hampshires. Army Service No. 40/1149. His name appears on Rawalpindi Muster Rolls (1st May-1880). He fought in 2nd Afghan War as L/Cpl (1878-1880) and was awarded Afghan Medal with two clasps - Charaisa and Kabul. Name also listed in the 69th Foot Journal - Good Conduct Badge (Sept. 1880). I think he was out of the Army when he married in 1887. Where was he from 1880 onwards? He appears on 1891 Census living in New Swindon, Wilts. Occ. Storekeeper. He went in the Army as a Clerk but he may have become a railway engineer (connection with GWR in Swindon). So my thought is he might have left 69th Reg. of Foot and joined another Regiment and then sent to Egypt working with railways.

Any help at all - I need a good nights sleep!

Where was he from 1880 onwards
Have you looked in the London Gazette for either the awards or where the Unit was

67th Regiment of Foot for the1865-1879
    South Africa
    Home Service. Ireland, England
    Burma
    India
    2nd Afghan War (1879)
in 1881 it became Hampshire Regiment ( 1st & 2nd Battallions) so presumably Frederick was discharged

You do not say whether you have his Army record, try this link yourarchives.nationalarchives.gov.uk/index.php?title=UserrGavinRobinson/British_Army/Pre-1881_Foot_Regiments

    OR the regimental link at

    serleshouse.co.uk

1887 Do you have the marriage certificate, this would give his employment so you would know whether he was a serving soldier

You have him on the 1891 census RG12 1584 49 44 Swindon do you have him in 1901 - 1911?

    Thankyou Elsabels for your reply.
Referring to your suggestions outlined in your reply:
    1. I have not looked in the London Gazette - as yet.
    2. I do not have his Army records, that is what I have been trying to obtain for 18 months or more. A friend visited Nat. Arch. at Kew and could
only find his Army No. and the mention in the Rawalpindi Muster Rolls.
    3. Hampshire Regt. Museum, Serle House gave me his Army No. and confirmed Freds entitlement to Afghan Medal/Bars but would not do any further research for me.
    4. Fred was living in Antwerp, Belg. as a civilian from 1893-1914, working in Antwerp Harbour as a mechanical engineer. I have details of his life for this period.
    5. I am sending for his marriage Certificate to Mary Elizabeth Taylor 1887, perhaps this will give me a clue.

    Thankyou,

Just found scrappy record of Medal Roll for 2nd Afghan War on Ancestry.co.uk Fred.Wm. Wood is mentioned but the handwriting is so bad I cannot decipher the writing alongside the medal and 2 bar entry. This could be a clue.

    Herllo Elsabels,

Just received marriage cert. for Fred. Wm. Wood and his second wife - Mary Elizabeth Taylor.
Nothing exciting or conclusive I am afraid. Marriage 10.10.1887. Widower. CLERK. No mention of Army life.
So now we have a timeline as follows:

    Born: Kensington 1854
    Married: Kensington 1874
Widowed: 1876 (Occupation of Clerk at this time of life)
Joined Army: 1876 - 40/1149 67th Regiment of Foot, South Hampshires
    1879 Afghanistan 6/10/1879 Charasia (Clasp)
    10th-23rd Dec. Kabul (Clasp)
    1880 Appears Muster Rolls Rawalpindi (1/5 - 30/9)
    Married: 1887 (2nd time) - Occupation Clerk
1891 appears of Census at Weymouth Road, Swindon New Town (Homes for GWR employees) occupation - Storekeeper.
1893 Appears of Aliens list for Antwerp - occupation mechanical engineer.
    1904 2nd wife dies
    1905 marries 3rd wife.
1914 dies from stroke whilst preparing to escape from Antwerp with wife and 3 children.
Death Certificate states - mechanical engineer.
We have a black and white photo of Fred which was taken from an oil portait. He is in uniform and it shows 5 medals. Medals are very poor and not to scale.

We thought at one time he might have changed his regiment and went to Egypt. 67th Hampshires did not go there. So where did he go to get the other medals?
