    Exclamation Joseph and Elizabeth Mitchell

    Joseph + Elizabeth Mitchell

    My 3xGtGrandparents are my brickwall - of all my branches the Mitchell line has been the most stubborn.

    My 2xGtGrandmother Elizabeth Mitchell was baptised 17/2/1833 at Haughton le Skerne (Durham) Parish Church - parents Joseph + Elizabeth Mitchell. Joseph was a Hind (this was from the Bishops Transcripts)
    In 1836 they were all living in Sedgefield
    1841c HO107 304/15/17/28 - the family were living in Ferryhill (Durham). Joseph an AgLab
    1851c HO107 2391/276/45 - the family had moved to Carville(Durham), Joseph still an AgLab. Joseph was shown as from Berwick on Tweed c1798, Elizabeth from Newby c1804
    I believe Joseph married an Elizabeth Bainbridge in Kirby Parish Church 24/5/1824 from Paul Joiner Marriage Index.
    Joseph died in Carville in 1874

    I have been unable to find anything else relating to either Joseph or Elizabeth and would appreciate any ideas/info/suggestions where to look. Unfortunately the records for Berwick seem to be sparse for this period

    This looks like son Robert's birth reg, it might be worth getting to prove mother name.

    Yes Noggin this is my family. I have the birth certificate for Robert he was born in Ferryhill 26/4/1841 parents Joseph Mitchell & Elizabeth nee Bainbridge. Joseph shown as a labourer.

    I have looked at Berwick on Tweed and the towns nearby ( Tweedmouth & Spittal) for Joseph Mitchell/Mitchel without any luck. I found a total of 48 Mitchells but no Joseph 1802/4. Only two Joesphs I found were born 1725 & 1835 in Berwick. You could try and get help on these two site:

    Hi Noggin

    You could well be right regarding Elizabeth's parents as Joseph + Elizabeth's children are William, Mary, Elizabeth, Elizabeth, their two youngest are Robert + Sarah. Naming patterns not strictly adhered to but maybe Joseph's father was William too?!

    I have tried the NDFHS, maybe I'll have to spend sometime at the Northumberland Archives at Woodhorn. Another problem is the proximity to the Border so any records could well be in Scotland

    I used these three site to search for Joseph and Elizabeth. You can try Scotland if you want, I don't know the county above Berwick. Lamberton is about 4 miles north of Berwick right on the boarder.
