My problem are four John W. Buckhorns from London and Liverpool.
John W. No. 1 is mentioned in the 1871 Census and it tells that he was born in Lancashire (Liverpool?) abt. 1841. His wife was a Mary and his children John Buckhorn (abt. 1867) and Margret Buckhorn (abt. 1871). No more information available.
John W. Buckhorn No. 2 was born in the Kingdom of Hanover, Germany abt. 1837. He lived in Liverpool, Lancashire and was a sugar houn labourer (What ever this is . . . LOL!) Here was the 1861 Census very helpful. No more information available.
John W. Buckhorn No. 3 was also born in the Kingdom of Hanover but abt. 1846. He lived in London and married a Sarah Pulfer from Ipswich in 1868. They can be found in each Census. Their grandson John Buckhorn lived with them all the years. I couldn't find out who his parents were. The father of John W. No. 3 was a German and his mother from England. No more information.
The Kingdom of Hanover was a large country within Germany. It would be very interesting for me to know the exact place and dates.
John W. No. 4 was born 1818 in London. His father was from Germany and his mother from England. John W. immigrated to America and founded a large family what is existing until today. He lived in New York but all his decendants in New Jersey. They are called Bockhorn in America. John W. No. 4 immigrated via Bremen, Germany to America. The question is why. As UK citizen was it much cheaper to book a passage from an English port. Why did changed his family name to Bockhorn? All official papers (f. e. passport) tells about Buckhorn. Wasn't he born in London and he left Germany not to become a soldier? Many young men did it. Did only serve the different information to cover his real existence? There is nothing to find about his life in England.
It is probable that all 4 Buckhorns had in original the name Buchhorn. Buckhorn is and was a very seldom name in Germany. Most Buchhorns got the name Buckhorn in English-language countries. Reason is the different pronunciation of the ch.
I hope for your help. Thanks.
Wolfgang (Buchhorn) from Germany
