BIG HELP REQUEST - PLEASE
Hello,
I am attempting to find out more information regarding one of my relatives, my Great grand father John Joseph Taylor who may have served during WWI.
I have made an assumption that as he lived in SouthBank, Middlesbrough that he may have joined a Yorkshire Regiment. Could you please check your records for any information on the army service records of John Joseph Taylor.
I have used Ancestry UK and found their research information to be very disappointingly generalised and vague.
I believe he may have served in WWI due to the existence of a family photo which shows him in a typical WWI army Infantry uniform.
John Joseph Taylor, was born 03-02-1878 in Southbank, Middlesbrough. He died 30-12-1949, also in Middlesbrough.
His father was William Taylor who was (b.1842- d.17-11-1922)
John Joseph Taylor, married Harriet Parsons on 26-12-1898.
He died 30-12-1949, also in Middlesbrough.
I am particularly interested in finding out which Battalion & Regiment he joined and served with. I presume, because of his association with the North East and particularly Southbank, Middlesbrough, that he may have joined a Yorkshire Regiment.
Can you give me any information regarding any army association to clarify this ? Ancestry Uk, gives information but this is disappointingly generalised and very vague and without detail in my experience, after I had put in specific and accurate search criteria.
As I have mentioned, we have a family photo which shows him with his wife Harriet Taylor.
He is in a WWI type uniform, but unfortunately I cannot make out any regimental badges due to the photographs grainy quality. There appears to be some insignia or numbers on his lapels, but again the detail is very blurred.
There is no hat shown in the photograph.
However, he does clearly have two small chevrons/stripes pointing upwards (located at the lower arm area) on the sleeve. I believe these could be wound stripes. Can anyone clarify this.
Alternatively, can you suggest a positive course of action and / or contacts for my research. I think a 1911 census record may be of some assistance, just to confirm his whereabouts close to 1914.
Thankyou for your assistance
Ian Taylor
