    Default Help finding father's grandparents

Can I ask for help in finding the names of my father's grandparents?
I know my grandfather is Joseph James Hughes, born in 1903 or 1904, possibly in Wales.
My grandmother's name is Violet Margery Brown, born in 1906 in London.
    They married in 1930.
I have found a lot of entries for both these names, so can't tell which ones are my grandparents.
Any and all help greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance,
    Steven Hughes.

any information that may relate to living persons via pm to Steven please

Have you got their marriage details? if so get their marriage cert (details above) and it will give both their fathers names

Yes I agree the best way forward is to get the certs. We can get so much info from them, and we can go back with them until 1837. Once you have correctly identified them you will also be able to use the census schedules.

Hello Voyager9 and welcome to Ancestryaid have a look round the forums, .

The site used by lala51 is freebmd.org.uk to move back you probably need to consider purchasing the marriage certificate in preference to a birth certificate, this will tell you your grandparents name, age at marriage, address employment and more importantly fathers name and employment, sufficient to get back on to the 1901 census but certainly the 1911 census ( we are not permitted to do 1911 lookups on Ancestryaid due to copyright implications)

I have had a look to see if I can identify the birth of a Violet Marjorie C BROWN circa 1904-1907 nothing

With regards to Jospeh James HUGHES 1903/4 UK wide search, 2 come up, both in N Wales Caernarvonshire ( now Gwynedd) one bangor and the other approx 10 miles away in Caernarvon! (on the site above) You may even have to learn a bit of Welsh!
    maps.google.co.uk

UK certificates cost £9.50 /$15.50 and can be ordered from gro.gov.uk

Post if you need any other help

Hello again Steven, In Your post of introduction you stated you came to Australia in the 1950s. Can you recall if your Father might have mentioned any of his Aunts or Uncles names (Hughes)? Also in regards to your Mother's family (Brown) can you recall if your Mother might have mentioned any siblings names ? Aunts and Uncles as well...All helps Steven..The Marriage Certificate would be the best option with this search..Elsabels has advised where you can purchase this...

    Hello Lady Marion,
Just wanted to clarify, I am looking for my father's parents' families, not my mothers; I've already made significant progress in that area.

My parents didn't really discuss their relatives when I was younger; I only knew about my grandparents and two uncles, a brother to each. I've only become interested in my family tree because my sister and I found some personal papers when winding up our parents' estate. There were relatives mentioned I never knew about and I'd like to found out more about them.

Hi There Steven, So its your fathers side of the family you are searching for..You mention two uncles so what was the name of your Fathers brother and a birth year for him if you have one also a birth place? All helps Steven but I feel the way to go here is to purchase the Marriage Certificate as mentioned above...

I've received my grandparents' wedding certificate, and managed to go back a further generation.

Looks like Joseph and James were popular names in the 1880's because BOTH my great grandfathers (Hughes and Brown) are named Joseph James.

Thanks to all for helpful suggestions.

    Steven.
