    Smile Convict Richard GOLDSMITH

    Hi all
Can anyone help me find out what became of a Richard Goldsmith who was born in 1831 in Ramsgate, he was imprisoned at the age of 12 for larcency and not learning his lesson was put on trial on 30 March 1848 age 17 for larcency, this time he was given 7 years transportation.
He was put onboard the Minden on the 21 July 1851 and arrived in Western Australia on the 14th October 1851.
He was convict no. 899 a shoe maker, i have found him on the freemantle prison site and he was given a conditional pardon on the 21 January 1854. From what i know that would mean he was not allowed to return to England, but i can find no trace of him.

Does anyone have access to any Australian records, ie, census, electoral roll, marrriage, deaths, that could possibly help tracing him.

    Thank you

    Sheila.

I looked at the Western Australian records from 1851 to 1930 and could not find a death, marriage or any children for Richard Goldsmith. It is possible that he moved to another state when his time was served. If he moved to South Australia or Victoria I cannot do a look up for that, you may have to wait and see if anyone else can help.

    Hi kptz,

Thanks for your reply the 1841 census you have found is correct, his parents were a Edward Goldsmith and Mary Jarman.

The Richard on the Probate Calendar is another Richard Goldsmith, there are quite a few Richard Goldsmiths from Ramsgate all born around the same year, which has made it very hard in putting the family together, but this Richard was definately not him, thanks anyway.

The death date you have found 13 Aug 1854 looks quite likely, although not sure about the second name Sydney as this has not shown up on his birth or baptism, but he was given a Conditional Pardon on the 21st January 1854, so he could have moved on and unfortunately died 8 months later.

Is there anyway i can find out more about this death or is it possible it could be in an Australian Newspaper, so i could have a look at this.

Thank you very much for this information i am sure this must be him, hopefully i can find out how he died.

    Best Wishes

    Sheila.

Thanks for your help, fingers crossed, will let you know if this is the correct Richard.
