    Exclamation Looking for 2 Sisters in Kent in 1871-1881

    Looking for 2 sisters.

    Ravina or Robina or Rovina Wooodruff (and other spellings of this name). Born 1868 In Donnybrook Barracks Dublin to parents of William Woodruff and Mary Brown, Mary born Limerick Ireland 1842.

    Last seen definiitely in 1871 in Cheriton Kent in Barracks with parents and 2 brothers, John Williaa and Frederick.

    Possible sighting in 1881 using name Rosina born Ireland 1868 in a Convent in Deal, Kent.

    Given that mother was Irish could this be her and did she go on to be a Nun afterwards.

    No sighting of her after that in marriages or deaths.

    Her family moved to Sheffield between the census of 1881 and 1891 and she wasn't with them.

    Edith Kathleen Woodruff born 1874 in Hougham Kent (Dover). Appears on 1881 census as Eade, nephew, female!!! I have got her birth certifcate and her parents are William Woodruff and Mary nee Brown, so I think she is correct. Nothing showing for her in marriages or deaths after 1881.

    Given that Edith had a nickname, could she be posing as another person calling herself another name. No Eade to be seen!

    Kind regards,
    Calmar

    Hi Noggin,

    1871 for Ravina Woodroffe spelling this way not Woodruff!
    In Barracks in Cheriton Kent. With Parents William and Mary, brothers John and Frederick.

    RG10; Piece: 1017; Folio: 61; Page: 10;

    1881 for a Rosina Woodruff, I only suspect this is her with name change but where born and year details are very similar. In Convent in Deal. She is not with family in Hougham at this time.

    RG11; Piece: 997; Folio: 74; Page: 3;

    1881

    Eade Woodruffe
    Christened as Ada Kathleen Woodruff but registered as Edith Kathleen in GRO indexes!
    Living at Lower row, Hougham, Dover, Kent.
    Father William is now not in the Army.

    RG11; Piece: 1007; Folio: 16; Page: 25;

    Kind regards,
    Calmar

    Yes, that is the family I am looking for for the girls Noggin! Frederick was my grandfather on 1871 census.

    I can't find either of them after 1881 but in my searches I have found another daughter for William and Mary. She is Gertrude born 1876 and died 1879, both in Dover.

    Marriages or deaths for either of them would be great. I have a feeling that Edith is called Ada after finding her Christening record recently and I think the birth details given by mother, with a Limerick Ireland accent, might be confusing her registration details a little! I think Eade pronounciation may be Ada really. I have a birth certificate so am sure of her parents. But she is definitely female not nephew as on 1881 census.

    Having looked around, i would agree this is the daughter of the family. As the daughter of a serving soldier she would probably be sent to ' boarding school'

    HAve you looked for the parents on the 1911 census or death certificates?

    Hi mrsp,

    Yes that is my grandfather before he left the army and married in 1894.

    That census looks promising for Ada/Edith. I wonder if she married in Dover and stayed there. mmmm?

    Regards,
    Calmar
