Thomas Johnson / Johnston born 1863/4 in Ireland

I have hit a brick wall with my Great Grandfathers Family,he was Thomas Johnson/Johnston born 1863/4 in Ireland.I know his Fathers name was William Johnston but nothing more about him.Thomas came to England (not sure whether he came alone or with his family),I do know he married in Liverpool in 1886 to Alice Lyon on the certificate his Father William is deceased,Thomas died in 1898 also in Liverpool.
On Thomas's Marriage certificate he is Johnston,however when their son Joseph (my Grandfather ) was born they were Johnson,I have found what I think is them in the censuses in Staffordshire on thes the Father William is deceased and the Mother is Mary Ann but whether these are the right people I can't be sure.
if you could help I would be really grateful as it would fill in the gap in my Family tree.
