Exclamation Dr James Pawle 1820 Settler to South Africa

Dr James Pawle 1820 Settler to South Africa
    Hi
My brickwall is my 4th Gr Grandfather James Pawle. He joined Wilson's Party to South Africa in 1820 as the Doctor aboard the "La Belle Alliance". He was married to Jemima Bacon the daughter of Stephen Bacon and Martha Aydon. She was a widow at the time of this marriage having previously being married to a John Stephenson. They had two sons James and Henry and once in South Africa three daughters Jemima, Julia and Maria Olivia. He eventually became Surgeon General of George.
My mystery is where does he come from? After much searching I think I found him in a Publication 19th Centuary Medics apprenticed to a William Wood in 1807 for 7 years for the sum 0f 50 Pounds. I next found him in a newspaper advertisement in the London Gazette in January 1813 for a dissolution of partnership notice between him and a George Edward Carruthers both male midwives, Surgeons and Apothecaries.
He also married Jemima in April 1813 in St Pancreas Church London.
I have not been able to locate a birth record for him, his death record in South Africa does not list his parents.
His eldest son James was born in 1817 in Ware Hertfordshire. The younger son James Rigg was born in Newington Surrey.
    Any help would be great!
    Thanks
    Gillian

Have you found the marriage entry for James PAWLE & Jemima STEPHENSON and checked their relationship to the witnesses?

I would now question whether soma of the information you read is correct, Jemima being the daughter of a Lord BACON, have you checked this out to see what her pedigree is and whether there is any information recorded against her 2nd husband?

    Hi
yes I have seen that - however looking at the parish records there is no mention of Lord anyone in the birth record of Jemima Bacon or her siblings. Her father was Stephen Bacon who married a Martha Aydon. The records are all available on Ancestry and on none of the childrens records is he mentioned with a title nor on the marriage record. I think the link is 'wishful' thinking. I googled Francis bacon and couldn't find any mention of children. Her fiirst marriage was to a Johan Stephenson witnesses William King and another King. The marriage to James Pawle was witnessed by Stephen Bacon and Susannah Mustaph. Which tends to put paid to the rumour that she was disowned by her family for marrying James. On her birth record her father's occupation is 'Customs Officer' on her siblings 'Mariner'.

Stephen and Martha's marriage was witnessed by Ann Bennett and William Bailey - who appears to have witnessed all the marriages that day!
    Regards Gillian

    Hello

It was a bit tongue in cheek regarding the 'Lord' and this isn't the first time I have come across a comment like this in an Overseas book!

For Customs officers have you tried this link

    nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/looking-for-person/customs-officer.htm

Hmmm Thanks for that - nexy time I'm in the UK I'll have to go back to Kew to have a look! Pity they haven't made those records available on-line!
Guess no one has any suggestions on how I can trace the illusive James Pawle's birth and Parentage.
    Cheers Gillian

    Hello Gillian

Sorry we haven't found your elusive ancestor James PAWLE, suggest you check where the records are before you arrive, a lot of records have been rehoused due to refurbishment etc.

    Default Dr Pawle

    Hi there gmauchan

You gave me more info that I had on Dr Pawle. We only knew that he was an orphan brought up by an aristocratic family.
Which one of their children was your g grandfather/mother. My g grandmother was Maria. Do you know any of the family in Scotland. I think my grandad lost touch with the family in Scotland after the death of his Aunt Violet there.
Do you have more info on his wife Jemima?
    Have a lovely day

    edut
