Brilliant idea! I have been going round in circles for a couple of years now.
My paternal grandfather was born Henry Sullivan in 1877 in Walworth, Surrey (now London), married Emma Elizabeth Carpenter in 1902 and his marriage certificate names his father as William Sullivan (labourer). However, the 1881 census names him as Daniel William and his wife as Hannah. I have searched high and low for their marriage details, let alone a marriage certificate. I have guessed at William being born in 1852 (died 1917) and Hannah in 1851 (died 1908) from census details. I have centred my attention on this family as the children fit perfectly with what word of mouth knowledge I remember from my late father.
It really is a stumbling block and I really, really want to crack this. You would think that such recent history would be easier to track down but certainly this has not been my experience. I have had tremendous "luck" with my mother's family right back to the 16th century and would certainly like to trace my father's roots further back than his father. My adult children would be so interested too.
Fingers crossed!
regards, Rosemary
