Wuilliam Woodruff Born Glossop c 1833

PLEASE can anyone help me to find my great grandfather William Woodruff. May be even John William Woodruff as recorded on one of his children's burth certificates!

On all census from 1871 in England he says he was born Glossop c 1833/34, but this changes through the census and on his death cert in 1918 he says he is 89 years old!! That makes a birth date of abt 1829.

In 1871 he was in the 2nd Bat 3rd Reg of Foot (The Buffs) in Kent with wife Mary (Brown) and children John William born 1864 Gibraltar, Ravina born 1868 Donny Brook Dublin, and Frederick born Aldershot 1870 (my grandfather).

I can find nothing in the Derbyshire records for him under either John or William. His father was Edward Woodruff as stated on marriage certificate in Limerick, Ireland. Occupation the same as his son before he enlisted was a Stove Grate Fitter.

I hahve been searching for his birth/parent details since 1992 and can't understand why he can't be found.

Please help me, I would be very very greatful if you could.

When did he marry & do you have his marriage cert? is Glossop Yorkshire or Derbyshire? I know it is between Sheffield & Manchester but that is all

Hi Pejay,

Yes I have 2 certs for marriage. The Civil Registration one and the one from Army Records Indexes. Married July 1860 at St. John's Church Limerick. I got the civil Registration one from IGI film but the church wouldn't let me have the original, said they hadn't got it!

Glossop is in Derbyshire but I can't find him either on 1841 or 1851 census with a father of Edward, which he says on marriage cert. The only one is in Lincolnshire but born 1829. Father Edward and mother Mary. That does not tie in with census records which says he was born Glossop.

I understand that some of the early census records in derbyshire are not available due to being destroyed perhaps.

I think you can dismiss the lincolnshire Woodroofe:

I agree. He doesn't match my great grandfather in later census. Pity about the Derbyshire records not being complete, I suppose I will never know the answer to this.
