Jessie Urquhart of Scotland

A BIG HELP needed for Jessie Urquhart of Scotland.

One of my great grandmothers, Jessie Gourlay nee Urquhart, married and died in Angus, Scotland. The censuses of 1861, 1871 and 1881 give her birthplace as either Helensburgh or nearby Rhu [Row] in then Dunbartonshire. Her birth does not appear on Scotslandspeople which may indicate that her family were Free Church of Scotland, Episcopal, something else or nothing. Her age in each census would indicate that she was born c1845.

I have her 1867 marriage certificate which states that her father was James Urquhart and mother Jessie Henderson. Her 1909 death certificate states that her father was William Urquhart and her mother, Ann Henderson.

I sure need help in breaking through this wall. Who was she and who were her parents?

Maybe her father was James William and mother Jessie Ann ? Sometimes people used both names but at different times . Just a thought John .

Hi There, Don't know if this would be of any help to you with your search, but on Family Search there is a Jessie Urquhart parents William and Jessie Nee Fraser Baptised 24th December 1854, born 8th December 1854 Inverness Scotland...Also born to the same parents

James John Urquhart
Born 26 November 1852, Baptised 22 December 1852 Inverness Scotland..

I did find two more entries for Urquhart this time parents being James and Jessie Gibson Urquhart...

David born 3rd October 1891, Anderston, Lanark Scotland..
Jane McKenzie Urquhart born 28th April 1881 birthplace Calton,Glasgow Scotland..

As Hazelnut mentioned it was not uncommon for parents to use their other names at different times..

Hi John

This may not help you but Jessie was/is the familiar name give to girls called Janet in Scotland although it was/is also used as a first name in it's own right. So your Jessie (Ann) Henderson may have been called Janet Ann Henderson on her marriage (or Ann Janet!). Have you found a marriage for James/William or William/James Urquart and Jessie/Janet Ann or even Ann/Janet Henderson?

In your position I would be looking for her parent's marriage and birth's and working forward from this. This may help you work through the confusion of names! Having Scottish ancestors myself I have learned to do this!

Thanks for your suggestions. I'm travelling at the moment and consequently relying on remote computers, hence the delay in acknowledgement.

I've looked previously at the ones you mention, Marion and got nowhere.

Do any of you know where I can find parish records for Dunbartonshire non Church of Scotland or Catholic records for this period?

Hi John, Have you thought about contacting the National Archives Of Scotland in Edinburgh as it holds a wealth of material in regards to Scotish ancestors..... This was formerly the Scotish Records Office...
