William Barry Born in Limerick Ireland in 1836

Where and when did he die

My Great grandfather William Barry Born in Limerick Ireland in 1836 appears on the British census in 1871 at Aldershot barracks with his wife. His wife died shortly after my grandmother was born in 1871, my grandmother Edith Barry appears on the 1881 census adopted, her marriage certificate 1898 shows her father "private soldier deceased." I have researched most military web pages The National Archives and BDM but have been unable to find out where and when he died.
He was in the 1st batallion 17th regiment of foot and married in Canada in 1863.
as there were no formal adoptions till the 1900s I wonder if he continued with his military service leaving his daughter in care

Have you contacted the Regimental Museum or Archives?

Maybe his daughter was being polite about him on her marriage, partic as someone else had raised her! There are a couple of censu entries that could be William BArry of Limerick!

The 17th Regiment of foot - later the Leicestershire Regiment common nickname for them was I think the Tigers . I do not know if the 17th foot were ever in Ireland where he perhaps enlisted. but they were sent out to Canada sometime in the 1860's try HM 17th Regiment of Infantry in America for some further info also have you tried the national archives? they may have some info
