Thread: Gladys Marriott later became Foote

Gladys Marriott - surname became Foote - B.1894 D.1973 Lived in East Looe with Grandparents.
Would there be any adoption records for 1894 at all? I have Gladys's B.Cert and D.Cert but the surnames don't seem to add up apart from the conclusion that she was maybe adopted when her mother married a Foote in Nov 1894 - Gladys was born in March 1894

There was no official system of Adoption before 1927. It was an informal affair and although some evidence may be found in Poor Law records, material may be hard to locate and confirm unless information is given on probate records. Often the children were placed into families that needed extra labour and had more financial resources to care for them. The child usually retained his/her original surname but not always.

Yes this is the Gladys Annie Marriott (born 11 Mar 1894), lived in Barbican Hill,East Looe - mother Elizabeth Painter, father William Marriott (info from B.Cert)
Elizabeth married as a 'spinster' in Nov 1894 to Frederick Foote. On Gladys's B.Cert it states mothers name as Elizabeth Marriott formerly Painter. I am assuming, because I cannot find a marriage for Painter to Marriott, and the fact that Elizabeth was a spinster when she married Fred Foote, that Elizabeth just called herself Marriott for appearances sake. I can't find info for William Marriott and be sure its the correct person.
I can't understand why she always lived with her Grandparents (Henry & Ann Painter) when her mother went on to have three more children who lived at home with her?
