Exclamation James Siddall Married To Sarah Hadfield in 1807

All events in Staveley in Derbyshire

James Siddall was married to Sarah Hadfield in 1807
In 1851 James states he was born in Staveley
In 1859 James dies aged 73, thus giving a birthdate of around 1786
There is no baptism of James of that date
In 1790 there is baptism of James and William, sons of Godfrey and Mary
Siddall's are thick on the ground in the area around Chesterfield and into the Peak District, but in a database of hundreds covering a vast area of north Derbyshire and south Yorkshire there is no marriage of a Godfrey to a Mary, no other children to Godfrey and Mary, no burial of a Mary within the area and within a reasonable time span that could possibly be wife to Godfrey.

I have three possible Godfrey marriages, to Rebecca, to Elizabeth within the are and the time span

There is a Settlement document concerning a James Siddall, apprenticed in Staveley, 'born about 1786' - no other details of where from or relationship.

There is a James baptized in Dronfield in 1788 but that is the nearest I have found.

Thanks to Fin for a brilliant idea, and a very big thank you to anyone who can prove James' parentage.

You are most kind and I appreciate your time and effort but I do have all these records. I have a massive database on Siddall and variations going back to around 1600 from about 25 parishes in Derbyshire - all taken from registers and census some years ago. I have family trees including the family mentioned in the Eyam plague - an abundance of Godfrey's married to any woman but a Mary, and any number of James's but none born within a reasonable time span of his estiamted date of birth, nor any indication that he might have been an adult baptism.

If I could just establish precisely the parentage of James I could tie him into an enormous tribe, probably going back to Boniface Sydall. I would love to be descended from a Boniface !

In 1859 James dies aged 73. How do you know this is the correct James ?
Two other James deaths were registered in Chesterfield between the 1851/61 census.

It looks as though he changed his age a bit.

This is definitely my family. proved many times over from registers, census, family knowledge, contact with relations and other researchers. 1841 ages are rounded down which explains the apparent anomaly with 1851. The age in 1851 and age at death do give a birthdate of c1786, and as you so rightly say there isn't one in Staveley or any nearby parish. My database of about 1200 entries taken from a number of pariah registers shows only the James son of William in Dronfield as the most likely candidate. Siddal's are thick on the ground in the area and it has always seemed most unlikely that a James would suddenly appear from far away when there are so many of them around.

If the Clerk who entered the baptism made a mistake it is possible that he got the father's name correct and the mother's wrong. So Godfrey and ????? That may be Elizabeth. Godfrey and Elizabeth baptised a daughter in 1784 and Elizabeth, wife of Godfrey dies in May 1786. Is it possibly that she died in childbirth giving birth to James and he just never got baptized.

I have clutched at more straws than you can imagine trying to solve this one. Just as a matter of interest the George Rodgers in 1851 is the son of James and Sarah's daughter Eilizabeth who married John Rodgers and were my 2 gr grandparents.
