Thread: George Crawford Born abt 1785

This is a brilliant idea! I've been stuck on my 4x great grandfather for a couple of years now. His name was George Crawford and he was born about 1785 somewhere in Scotland.

My problem is finding out where in Scotland he came from. He moved from Scotland to Leicestershire somewhere before 1817 as he married Ann Roberts (a widow) on the 21st Jan 1817 at All Saints Church, Loughborough. George was a rope maker in Loughborough until his death in 1846. I have found his will but it doesn't give a clue to where he came from and I've checked for settlement papers but there aren't many surviving for Leicestershire, and predictably his didn't!

The only Crawford's in Leicestershire at that time were either descended from George and lived around Loughborough or were related to the Crawford family in Leicester, although I've found no connection between these families. If anyone can offer some help I'd be most grateful!

Hi, I think we may be researching the same ancestor - a George Crawford who went to Loughborough from Scotland in the early 19th century under mysterious circumstances which I am beginning to unravel. If I am correct about these he would have to have been born in 1781 or before. I believe his wife's maiden name was Broughton. They had six children and I am descended from one of these - George Crawford born in 1822. The others were Edward born 1817, William born 1819, Henry born 1820 and Sarah born 1825. Ann listed these in her prayer book (which I own). She also mentions another son Thomas Robert born in 1813 but if, as you say, she was a widow when she married George Crawford, he could have been a son from her first marriage. Could you be descended from one of these children? As I was born in 1950 the George Crawford from Scotland is my 3 x great grandfather. Very much look forward to your reply.
