    Default Fairnell-Berwick area

    Hi,
I've got a bit of poser on a branch of my tree, this branch concerns my nephews wife's family. I am looking for help with Margaret Fairnell c1862. This what I do know. She married William Wood on the 6th April 1885 in Newcastle upon Tyne. I have the certificate. Her father is down as William Fairnell(deceased) a Mariner. Another person researching this family also has a Margaret Fairnell, she also has a marriage certificate. She has Margaret marrying Thomas Wood in 1883 in Berwick, this Margarets father is Robert Fairnell(living) an Iron Moulder. To top it all in the 1891 census Margaret & William were living at 7 Pitt Street Newcastle. Margaret & Thomas were living (wait for it) at 11 Pitt Street Newcastle!. I know there must be two Margarets born the same year in the same area, but I can only find one birth. That Margaret is down as Margaret Brackett Fairnell born 1862 Berwick. I found a Margaret B Fairnell in the 1871 census living with William Fairnell but he was born c1809 and she is shown as his granddaughter.
Could anyone help me with Margaret with a father called William living in the Berwick area.

    A puzzled
    Jim

You already have this but for reference - 1871 census Bridge Street Berwick
William Fairnell mariner ? 61 railway porter b Berwick
    Mary 59 b Tweedmouth
    Richard 20 shipwright b Tweedmouth
    Josephina C 16 domestic servant b Tweedmoouth
    William 15 shipwright b Tweedmouth
    Margaret B 9 grand daughter b Berwick
    * On 1861 census William senior recorded as a mariner

Maybe you should buy the birth certificate for Margaret B. I think it is possible that she was the illegitimate child of one of William and Mary's older children. If she was brought up by her grandparents it is possible she named William as her father at her marriage - either for respectability or because she thought of him as her father.

    Hi,
Thank you for the replies. William Wood born c1865 in Newcastle, his parents were Mark Wood & Mary Sparks. It states on the marriage certificate of Margaret & William that Mark is deceased(1885). Just gone over the certificate again and one of the witnesses was William Fairnell. At the moment I don't have details of the 'other' Margaret & Thomas. The lady who contacted me is waiting for their marriage certificate.I knew nothing of Margaret & Thomas until last Sunday. The 'other' Margaret had a child out of wedlock, his name was John Ferguson Fairnell born 1879.He was this ladies grandfather. I've been through the Woods I have and not found a Thomas, so don't know if he is related.

Gillian, You might have a point about being illegitimate. I'll get her decendant Margaret Wood ! to order one. Might be the answer.

    Jim

Just had a look at the Woods and Mark Wood had a brother William. So as Mark was deceased maybe William gave her away.
