Default Samuel Saunders Born 1866? Bulcote, Nottingham

I am trying to confirm whether this DOB is correct for my Great Granddad is correct. I have his M.Cert and the date on there is 1896 age 27, and his D.Cert shows he died in 1909 age 38.

The B.Cert that I have seems correct with the name of his mother (Mary Ann Blatherwick) corresponding with his brothers details. Unfortunately the B.Cert shows no Fathers name.

    Default Hello there,

Welcome. May I ask a couple of questions, is he Samuel Saunders or Blatherwick on his birth certificate, I can find no suitable 1866 listing for Saunders but a couple of posssibles for Blatherwick, same question for his brothers certificate.

    EDIT

    Birth - June 1866 - SANDERS Sam - Basford - 7b 155

There is a record of a baptism - 3 June 1866 - Samuel SANDERS - Burton Joyce Cum Bulcote, Nottingham, England. Mother Mary Ann Sanders.

I'm not sure what to make of this, if the minister knew Mary Ann he would know if she was married to a Mr. Sanders/Saunders, but it would appear no mention of dad on the birth certificate. I think I would like to see this baptism record and see if there is a note in the margin.

I can't find a suitable marriage, so I'm off to look for census entries.

This looks like the family in 1861

Source Citation: Class: RG9; Piece: 2471; Folio: 87; Page: 1

    Ann Blatherwick 70
Mary Ann Sanders 27 - grandaughter - born Bulcote - widow
    Joseph W Sanders 7
    Henry C Sanders 4
    Harriet Sanders 1

So young Samuel must have had a different father.

    Marriage
    Mary Ann Blatherwick to William Sandars - March 1852 - Basford - 7b 105.

I wondered about that too Gillian, looks likely with Harriet only being one in 1861.

I have them on all the censuses I think, Mary Ann remarried, Joseph Stafford Dec 1867. I'll wait to see if the census entries are needed before I post.

Thank you for all your replies - all the info that you've given is what I have so I'm guessing it is the correct 'Samuel/Sam Saunders/Sanders/Blatherwick!' I wondered whether to send for the B.Cert with Samuel Blatherwick on it as the DOB seems nearer to the Marriage/Death dates I have.

I still can't understand why there should be such an age difference between B.Cert and M.Cert/D.Cert. Did they lie in those days?????!!

I think this is the correct birth, he would have been a Sandars/ Saunders cos his mum was, but Mr Saunders was dead. Mum then remarried, the baptism entry might give you a clue as to who his father was, if you can get to see it in the flesh.
