SOLVED THANKS FINBAR!
Dear Ancestry Aid,
I wonder if any of you can help with an ancestor who was a naughty chap back in 1834. Richard Piercy of Rumboldswhyke, Chichester was, at the age of 26, transported to Van Diemen's Land for the period of 7 years. He was convicted of larceny. The young Richard was a labourer who was accused of stealing a John Newman (wheelwright)'s tools. (A plane, a rule, an auger bit, a hammer and a chisel).
The date of the sentence was the 5th January 1834.
Richard was taken to Portsmouth and was transported on HMS Lady Kennaway.
He survived the trip and arrrived at Van Diemen's Land on the 13th February 1835.
After that we have lost him! Any of you clever folk able to find him either in Tasmania or back in England?
A friend of my mum's is particularly keen to find out what happened to this lad - he doesn't have access to computers and I don't have any current subscriptions so any halp would be really appreciated.
Thanks in advance. Neil.![]()
