Default James O'Neill, Co. Antrim, Northern Ireland

Hi I signed up last year but never came back to site to ask any questions. Brilliant website, don't know what I was thinking.
My great great grandfather was James O'Neill born between 1841 and 1845 I believe. He was the son of James O'Neill (weaver) but I don't know his mothers name. If anyone can help me with this I would be forever grateful. James O'Neill married Sarah Troland in 1866 at Garryduff Presbyterian Church. He had been living in Kilraughts for 7 years, but where he was before that I do not know. He and Sarah had their children in Castlequarter, Ballymoney but then settled in Tullaghans and Craigs in Finvoy. If anyone knows anything about O'Neills in these areas, even if it is not James, I would love to hear from you.

Barrie Hi and welcome back to Ancestry Aid. I suppose you have heard all the stories about Irish Ancestors being hard to trace.. Aint that the truth..I am still no further ahead after six years of trying to find any information what so ever on my Gt Gt Grandfather and his family so I wish you all the best..Have you tried Family Search using the Pilot Search method?..I would just type in the surname and place name and see what comes up..Its a long shot I know but you might find some answers.

As you probably know Emerald Ancestors is the best for Northern Irish Ancestry and I expect you found the marriage there. I looked for his birth but there are very few records that far back and not his. Sorry!
Irish records online are increasing in number quite rapidly so it is always worth searching again every few months.

    Hi Marion
Thank you for your advice regarding Familysearch, isnt it funny how it makes a difference to how you put in the information? I will try that and see what happens. You I started researching 2 years ago and my attitude was exactly that I would find nothing because it was Ireland, but you know I was so wrong and I have loads of information and lots of new found cousins in County Antrim. I have even had the joy of meeting up with them and looking at the areas in which my ancestors lived and worked. I am hooked now! I am in Scotland, 20 minutes from Falkirk if you need a hand finding information on your family.

    Hi Gillian
I have used Emerald Ancestry and it is a great tool to start with. I find the Ulster Historical Foundation fantastic too. Thanks for looking for births for me, that was very kind; it very frustrating that the records don't go back so far, but I am determined that the information is out there somewhere.
All the best with your research
