Thread: Who was writing to Aunt Clara (Kelly, nee Readshaw)?

I have one page of a letter, starting:

My Dear Aunt Clara,
and Little Lizzie Kelly (now Carter) and all the other Carters, big and little whom I have never seen

It was sent from Keats Street, Sunnybank, Brisbane, Queensland and is dated 10/3/[19]49.

There must have been another page, because it ends mid-sentence.

Clara was my great-grandmother, Lizzie, her only daughter, my grandma.

From the letter I know that the writer left England in 1912, starting off (I think) in Perth, then Cairns, then to Brisbane.

The names mentioned in the letter are:

Randall - who worked in 'Buying' - Soft Furnishings, Dress Materials, Hosiery, Haberdashery, Costumes and Millinery
Beatrice, whose 73rd birthday was soon after the letter was written.
Bill and his wife Anne
Harry - At Townsville - so too far (from Brisbane) to come for tea.

I suspect that the writer is the father of Randall, Bill and Harry, but cannot be sure.

I suppose my question is: is there any way of finding out if any Kellys, Readshaws (or Harpins - and I don't know why I think they may have been part of the Harpin family - I really must Index my correspondence better) were in Keats Street in 1949.

I guess if you need to find out who was living in Keats Street you'd need to contact the relevant local archives and see if they have directories or electoral rolls.

You do not say where the letter was addressed or give details of Aunt Clara KELLY

The writer is either a niece or nephew of Clara & her Husband and cousin to Lizzie ( is that a dim. of Elizabeth)
The writer appears to be older than Lizzie.....as he refers to her 'little'

Beatrice, b 1876.....soon to be 73, but in what context, in the UK or Australia?......how about scanning the letter in or dare i say 'type' it out?

I've just worked my way through the 1949 Electoral Roll for Brisbane, and unable to find any Kellys, Readshaws or Harpins resident in a Keats St.

No Readshaws or Harpins were represented in fact.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions - to Finbar for looking through the records for me and to The Lady Marion for providing a contact address.

I'm about to become incommunicado (no internet access) for a week (but it is a whole week to spend researching family history - whoopee!) I have a lot of Census details for Clara's family and other family members, and will copy this thread to my laptop to ponder over one evening.

I'll let you know if I get anywhere with this one.
