    Default ANN CRAVEN

For quite a few years now I have tried to find a marriage without sucess of James Challinor and Ann Craven the parents of my ggrandfather Hugh Challinor they had lots of children and she called herself Ann Challinor on all the census. The first child was born in June 1853 Henry Challinor. I have found a marriage for a James Challinor and Ann Sinker but as the name Craven is used for a grandchild Jessie Craven Challinor I wonder if they were never married at all. An old photo from another of the children Catherine states Ann Craven as her mother. Any thoughts ? my first thoughts were that there were two mothers Ann Sinker and then Ann Craven Who he never married but fathered the last lot of children, as her age varies in the different census also the spelling Ann/Anne

Any baptismal records or birth certs for children, Chris?

They could help solve the mystery perhaps.

    Chris,

The Sinker marriage looks worth investigating. Have you looked at a birth registration for any of James & Ann's children to see what the mother's maiden name is recorded as?

Also, there is a marriage 20 AUG 1832 at Tarporley that is worth looking at - a William CRAVEN married a Sarah SINKER, it may be just a coincidence, but worth ruling out as possible connections.

    Good Luck,
    Deakin.

    From Tarporley Parish Register
    The entry given is:
Ann d/ of William CRAVEN & Sarah SINKER bp 19/08/1833
(assumed to be Mr & Mrs CRAVEN, their marriage being in 1832.)

An examination of the actually register shows:

Ann William CRAVEN & Sarah SINKER illeg d/o bp 19/08/1833

Ann is not a daughter of the marriage, the next entry is

William s/o William &Sarah CRAVEN also bp 19/08/1833

What do we know, Ann was born pre 1832 when her mother married William CRAVEN, and not as suggested by the LDS site 1833!

Hi Finbar, yes we have birth certificates for Henry Ann and James's Son and it has Ann Craven written on it, it's a marriage for Ann and James Challinor that we can't find, perhaps they never married !

Thanks Deakin, I had James down as being married to Ann Sinker at first but now this looks unlikely, I think Elsabels has got the right answer, see below. Thanks to all that looked for me, much appreciated as I live in Australia.
