Hi Dave , found on 1851 census the same information as you have , from your previous post on Emma . Why was John and his sister lodgers at that age i wonder!
I am so curious about all this I can't tell you! - Hoping finding out who John's parents were and what happened to them would solve the mystery. There are Romany gregory families so presuming both John and Emma where Roma

Been quite successful with the emma side of the family, gone back 15 generations from me through part of that tree and working on another side - Having less success with who what where and why with John Gregory, in a later census he shows up as John Bull aged 16 but when he marries he is John Gregory again! - Only real detail I have on him is a birth year in Hythe Hampshire!
Hi Dave
I had a Iook through aII the census records for your surname and HYTHE. It seems a common theme that chiIdren are not with parents and when they were oId enough were servants and boarders.I found connections with Wyatts and James as nieces and nephews and this record
Gregory
Caroline

Head
Properitor Of House
Hythe, Kent
Court Lodge Farm, Ightham, Kent

Niece and nephews surname of JAMES She was the oIdest Gregory I couId find and there was one other coupIe John and Susan with 5 chidren but none born in Hythe and the John was the wrong age. Did the parents deiberateIy miss the census or is there a transcription error we are missing?

Hello
Have you got the marriage certificate of John GREGORY & Emma RAMPTON?
Dec 1867 Southampton 2c 73, this will show his father's name together with his occupation, and is only as reliable as the person who gives the info!
I think there is a tie in with the BULL family, in 1851 he is found at H107 16/81 479 26 with George & Janenee (ORCHARD) BULL inder the name of GREGORY, then in 1861 he is still with the family desc a John BULL, In the same house is William SAILOR ( TAILOR) & Luke BULL aged 75
You have 2 additional surnames to base your research around
I think the children Sara b 1843 ref 8 186 & John Gregory b 1845 8 185 both New Forest ....presume this is correct area, otherwise as I live in the NW I would need a gepgraphy lesson!

HI Dave - Susan Gregory was born in Hythe and at the time of the census was just Iiving in Kent. I am aware where Hythe is as Its my part of the country. I Iived and have famiIy in Dorset and Hampshire. and IOW New Forest is on the edge of Southampton and you pass it on the way down from Newbury through Southhamton into Hampshire into Bournemouth which is now in Dorset but was in Hampshire.

Yes new forest gypsy families - Sarah and John are with the Bull family in Tadley in 1851, by 61 Sarah is not with them but John is.
