    Default Hart - Phillip

    Dear Listers,
    I have an interesting problem..........

Recently I was handed photo of an inscription from the Great Synagogue of London.
It shows a Phillip who was born to a Moses, who was the son of Myer the High Priest.

Now I have a fair bit of information on the family. With Moses we have a b.c1794, m.21 Feb. 1819, d.1841-44. Spouse Leah Benjamin.
There are nine children, Leah b.1818, Solomon Zelig b.1818, Sarah b.1821, Joseph b.1827, Lipsman b.1826, Benjamin b.1826, Rachel b.1827, Judah b.1831, Mickael b.1835.

This is a Jewish Family and so there for we need to allow for the anglicizing of hebrew names. Moses is Moshe HaCohen.

If you are able to spend a little time to research the Moses and Leah Hart I'd really appreciate it.

    Hawks, Ray

Basicly as I said to Gillian.

    Thank you Bandit,
yes that I believe is them. But I don't see a Phillip, which makes me think that one of the boys with what we might call a typical Jewish names may have called himself Phillip.
    Regards, Hawks

hi - I found this to start
The earliest Ashkenazi synagogue constructed in London after the return of Jews to England in the 17th century was built about 1690 at Duke's Place, north of Aldgate. The congregation grew, and in 1722 a new building was erected with the cost being born by businessman and philanthropist, Moses Hart. An enlarged building, designed by George Dance the Elder, was consecrated in 1766.
Between 1788 and 1790, the third synagogue was built on the site. This building would stand until destroyed by the Germans in 1941. Unusually for the times, the principal donor was a woman, Judith Hart Levy, a descendant of Moses Hart. The architect was James Spiller. The building was in the classical style identified with Adam. It was redecorated and repaired in 1832 and 1852 by John Walen, and restored again with small renovations in 1899 and 1930.[1]
The Royal Dukes of Cambridge, Cumberland, and Essex, sons of George III, visited the Great Synagogue of London in 1809. There were seated on elegant Egyptian revival chairs as they watched the religious service.[2]
The synagogue was destroyed in the London Blitz on May 10, 1941

Cantor was Myer Iyon from 1767

I aIso found Moses Hart 1796 married to RacheI SoIomon born 1800 M 2nd May 1821 at the great Syna gogue - I aIso founf 7 other Hart marriAGES

SO are we Iooking for a Hart or PhIIIip with a different surname and what sort of date? There are Iots of PhiIIp hart on the census records bt none seem to be attched to a Moses- I wII Iook further - got a couPie of ideas
