Default John Coles-1841 census Goucestershire-not born in county

I've been stuck for years on this man who is my 4x Great-Grandfather. He is listed as not born in county of Gloucestershire in the 1841 census for Sezincote, Glos, as is his wife Mary. There are so many John Coles b. abt 1770, many of them married to Marys that it is impossible for me to know which is him. I've narrowed it down by checking the marriage indexes and then looking for children for these couples, but it still leaves me with quite a number of possibles. Can anyone help with info or suggestions, please?

    Hello

I am not sure that there was a village / hamlet by the name of Sezincote Glos, I think your ancestor may have worked on the house that was built there! He is desc as a carpenter, I ggogled and found quite a bit about the House and its Indian influence, also looked at books.google.co.uk. Maybe there are some accoutns lying somewhere that give an indication as to who was employed on the project....

Have you established who Fanny Coles is?

Hi Thanks for replying. there's a pop. of about 60 at Sezincote in 1841-various occupations. In his will, though, John Coles was described as 'Clerk of Works at Sezincote' which sounds a bit grand for such a tiny place, so I have wondered if he worked at the House.
As to Fanny-no idea! There's a Martha Coles buried next to John and his wife Mary, (At Longborough) but I don't know who she was, either.

Hi There Janet51, from my search I have found that Sezincote was a grand house in Glo, designed by English architect
Samuel Pepys Cockerell. Maybe your fellow did have some kind of connection to the house itself. This house Sezincote is the one Samuel Cockerall is best known for.

Yes, fantastic place. Frustratingly, there is a document in the National Archives dated 1834 in which Sir Charles Cockerell quotes from a letter from his Clerk of Works, but doesn't name him.

There are a lot of records relating to the house at Gloucestershire Records Office - have a look at the online catalogue. I guess it might be worth your while to make the trip when you can to investigate!
Have you thought of looking for apprenticeship records in neighbouring counties?
